Hoppy Hearts SC Domestic rabbit care education and classes
Rabbit rescue and adoption Welcome to Hoppy Hearts SC! We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization in South Carolina.

Our mission is to improve the lives of domestic rabbits and our community by means of education about house rabbits and their proper care, by rescuing and adopting out abandoned rabbits, and providing rabbit therapy visits to assisted living facilities and other community organizations. We provide a Basics of Bunny Care Bunny 101 class and a Bunny Health Bunny 102 class, both in person and online.

These classes are for anyone interested in learning about bunnies and their care. We are happy to have anyone in the class who currently has companion bunnies, as well as potential future adopters (from any rescue) or those just interested in learning more. We also are happy to give these classes to shelter and rescue groups. We are working on additional class offerings, including Bonding Bunnies. We also work to rescue and adopt out homeless bunnies. To help with this, we are building a network of foster homes throughout the state of South Carolina to help us rescue more bunnies. Our goal with this foster home network is that rabbits rescued by Hoppy Hearts can be placed into a home environment while waiting for their forever homes, rather than in a more stressful shelter environment. We are available to help with bonding and bunny behavior issues also. Contact us here or at [email protected] to find out more.

We are highlighting adoptable bunny Cannoli today! Cannoli came to us with his two brothers after they were found in a soaking wet cardboard box sitting in the middle of a baseball field during a thunderstorm. Cannoli’s two brothers have been adopted but Cannoli is still waiting.

Cannoli has pretty coloring and a charming personality. He enjoys visitors and always sits on the side of his ex pen nearest people so he can keep an eye on what is going on and get the latest scoop. 😉. Like most bunnies, Cannoli does not love being picked up. But petting and socializing are just fine with him!

We would love for Cannoli to find the perfect foster or adopter. If you are interested in adopting or fostering Cannoli or any of our bunnies, please fill out our application by clicking Apply Now at https://www.hoppyheartssc.org/adopt

We are funded through donations only. We receive no outside funding and have no paid employees. To donate to the care of the bunnies at HHSC, go to https://www.hoppyheartssc.org/donate

We were hoping we would have good news about our second intake from yesterday. However, in rescue things do not always work out for the best.

This rabbit’s story demonstrates one of many unpleasant things that can happen to a bunny when a person decides they no longer want it and “sets her or him free”.

Lucky (as her finders named her) was a little black 8 week old bunny. She showed up dumped in the finder’s yard. The finder only knew she was there because she caught site of her cats chasing something. She rushed out to save this rabbit, but before she got to it, her dog had picked it up in his mouth. The finder got the bunny from the dog to safety and contacted us. The finder transported Lucky from her home in the middle of the state to meet one of our coastal volunteers, who is also an exotics vet tech. We felt with possible injury, that would be the best place to take her. Even our volunteer’s employer helped on a weekend day to examine Lucky.

Lucky had no obvious injuries but did have a severe respiratory infection. She was treated for the shock and infection. However, Lucky passed away last night. All of these things combined were just too much for her small body to handle.

We will never know for sure, but the most likely scenarios are a previously dumped bunny had babies while fending for herself, someone dumped an unwanted pet or someone’s unspayed pet rabbit had unwanted babies that were dumped .

This rabbit was a living creature and did not deserve to be thrown away like yesterday’s garbage. This is why we posted about her. Perhaps someone will see this and realize dumping a domestic bunny is not freedom. It is a death sentence and cruel and irresponsible.

Binky free Lucky. Your life mattered to all of us. ❤️🌈 💔

Thank you to racheal.mallory and thank you to the people who rescued the bunny and did everything they could for her.

Saturday was a busy day with 2 new intakes of bunnies in need. This first rabbit’s name is Starlight Sunday, and she is a beautiful French lop with a sad and touching story. Starlight’s human mom recently passed away very unexpectedly. It is easy to see that Starlight was deeply loved and well cared for. In fact, her human mom’s dying wish was that Starlight be found a perfect home. We intend to fulfill that wish.

Starlight is 4 years old. Family members from out of town are still going through papers, but they hope to find her veterinary records to tell us if she has been spayed. Regardless, we will be setting up an appointment next week for her with our vet. Right now, she is obviously still settling in. She has been through so much over the last few weeks and her life has been turned upside down. Even with that and the stress from changing environments today, she still allowed me to cuddle and pet her. This seemed to help relax her also.

This bunny had her own bunny room and was used to free roaming when her mom was home to supervise. If you feel like you could be the perfect home for Starlight or you would be willing to foster her until her perfect home is found, please fill out our application by clicking Apply Now at https://www.hoppyheartssc.org/adopt

We will introduce our second intake in another upcoming post. With 2 new intakes, Hoppy Hearts SC has placed a temporary freeze on new intakes. We are officially over capacity with multiple calls still coming in daily. 😞

Daisy and Debbie are a bonded pair of Dutch rabbits. These girls were dumped overnight in a cardboard box in front of a vet clinic. They are with one of our fosters and are so much fun!

They get along well with the foster’s cats and (well behaved) kids. Favorite activity is being in the middle of whatever is going on, especially when it involves getting up on the couch with the family. Outgoing, brave, curious, and beautiful - hard to ask for more.

If you have ever had a bonded pair, you know how special that bond is to witness. If not, here is your chance to experience a bonded pair without the stress of having to go through the bonding process. ❤️

These girls are spayed and up to date on RHDV vaccine (yearly booster required).

We posted a reel of our adoptable bunnies a few days ago and now we would like to highlight each individually. First up is Snickers. This handsome Netherland dwarf is the perfect “family bunny”. He is laid back and confident, not to mention his beautiful color. Snicker’s foster says he does well in her active home (2 resident bonded bunnies, cats, a very elderly dog, and two well behaved children) and enjoys being a part of the action.

Snickers came to us after being abandoned on someone’s front porch in a wire cage. These people in turn were moving out of the country and had “purchased tools on Amazon to euthanize him”. 😡. We stepped in and Snickers is now safe and waiting for a forever home of his own.
