Just in case you missed it - Jeremy is the most adorable dog! He's done well at events away from the shelter and everyone talks about how awesome he is. His adventure buddies recently said that Jeremy is "an absolute legend. Super friendly. Very energetic, likes to run around and explore. Calms down if you give him a bit to adjust and speak calmly. Sweet dog!" (Jeremy, ID A254080, approx. 1 year old, approx. 60 pounds of pure love)
We can't wait for someone to adopt him and let him change their life in all the best ways! Dogs at OCAS are only $50 during October 2026!

Our very own Officer Gamez was honored to attend this Semi-Annual First Responders Appreciation Breakfast (hosted by University Lodge #408). First Responders in our community need our appreciation and support, but that support is even nicer when it comes with a homemade breakfast! 🥰 Thanks so much to these University Lodge members who were up early cooking and treating everyone to such a nice time full of fellowship and fun.

We have some wonderful news to share—this handsome guy is officially getting a dental procedure very soon!
Before booking his appointment at an outside clinic, our team completed bloodwork to make sure he can have anesthesia. Ford is currently dealing with severe dental disease. Addressing this won't just make him more comfortable, but it will also help him put his best paw forward when looking for a forever home! 🩺🐾 (Ford, ID: A254243, available for adoption!)

As we enter this magical time of year filled with Halloween and Día de los Mu***os, we want to take a special moment to honor the animal companions who will always hold a place in our hearts. ❤️
One of our wonderful team members, Melissa, is setting up a beautiful Ofrenda (remembrance table) in our shelter! This is a joyful display created to welcome back and celebrate the spirits of loved ones who have passed. Because our pets are true family members, we're excited to honor them by dedicating this display to them.✨
We want to include your furry, feathered, or scaled family members.
Please email a photo of your beloved late pet to [email protected], along with their name. Of course you can also drop a photo by the shelter. Melissa will place them on the table alongside festive elements to guide their spirits back for a visit.

Kevin is precious. He's about 6 years old, and he's a little stressed about being in the shelter (that's fair) - but still so cute and sweet! He did such a nice "sit" for me this morning. Will someone step up to foster or adopt this sweet guy? He'll need adjustment time and we don't know how well he does with other pets at this point - but we can provide great recommendations for slowly introducing pets to each other if needed. Kevin deserves a real shot at happiness and we want to help him get into a place where he can live his best life. 🥰Check out his adorable YouTube video in the comments! Orange County Urgently Seeks Community Support and Seasonal Staff for Cold Weather Cots Program

As temperatures begin to drop, Orange County is preparing to launch the annual Cold Weather Cots emergency shelter program, which provides life‑saving overnight shelter to unhoused residents from November through March.

Last winter, the program activated on 56 nights between November 2025 and March 2026, offering 1,788 service interactions and sheltering 217 individuals. These numbers underscore the essential and growing need for community support as the 2026–2027 season begins.

Orange County Housing Director Blake Rosser said, “The Cold Weather Cots program is one of the most critical safety initiatives we operate each year. When temperatures fall below freezing, people’s lives are at immediate risk. Ensuring that we have the supplies and staffing needed to open our doors every night is essential to keeping our community members safe. We are asking the community to stand with us so no one is left out in the cold.”

Critical Need for Donations

To ensure every resident seeking refuge is met with warmth, safety, and dignity, the program urgently needs donations of cold‑weather cot supplies and daily‑use essentials. Items requested include:

• Soft breakfast bars
• Instant grits and oatmeal
• Individually wrapped snacks
• Applesauce pouches
• Gatorade and electrolyte packets
• Instant coffee packets, creamer, sugar
• Hot cocoa
• Disposable plates, bowls, utensils
• Cups, napkins, disinfectants
• Gloves, masks, hand sanitizer
• Toilet paper, tissues, trash bags
• Laundry detergent and quarters

Donations may be dropped off Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., at the Orange County Housing Department, 2501 Homestead Rd, Chapel Hill, NC, Attn: Stephanie Figuenick.

Seasonal Hiring to Support Program Operations
To operate safely and effectively throughout the winter months, the Cold Weather Cots program is also actively hiring for two temporary positions:

These roles are essential to maintaining nightly operations, ensuring guest safety, and supporting the dedicated staff who manage shelter sites during extreme winter conditions.

Shelter Locations
The program operates across three locations:

• IFC Community House (men) – 1315 MLK Jr. Blvd., Chapel Hill
• IFC HomeStart (women and families) – 2505 Homestead Road, Chapel Hill
• Orange County Shelter – 828 MLK Jr. Blvd., Chapel Hill

IFC locations operate every night from November through March.
The Orange County location opens on White Flag Nights, when temperatures reach 32 degrees or below. Walk‑ins are welcome, and all guests receive cots, blankets, and snacks.
Community Partnerships
The program expresses deep appreciation to its partners—including local congregations, mutual aid groups, IFC teams, volunteer organizations, and the Town of Chapel Hill’s public safety and crisis response teams—whose support makes this work possible.

This worried little face belongs to Wishbone. She's about a year old and she needs an adopter or foster that can help her with socialization. She's very shy and fearful. She would do best in a calm home without small children (she needs people that understand how to respect her boundaries and go very slowly with her). She's so fearful that she could be a flight risk - meaning she may feel the need to try and "escape" most of the time until she's able to adjust. So far, she has not shown any aggression, she's just very scared. She needs help from people that are willing to be patient and work with her. She did let our medical team examine her, draw blood from her, and vaccinate her - and we know that was scary for her so we have high hopes that she will improve in a home setting, but of course we can't be sure how things will go. This sweet lady was found abandoned, tied to a tree. But she's happy and not dwelling on it. We may not know much about her history, but her future looks bright!
