Today, we pause to remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the heroes who answered the call on September 11, 2001.
Among those heroes were the incredible search and rescue dogs who worked tirelessly alongside their handlers at Ground Zero and other sites. Through smoke, rubble, exhaustion, and unimaginable devastation, these dogs climbed into places people could not safely reach searching for survivors, locating victims, and providing comfort simply by being there. Hundreds of working dogs and their handlers participated in the rescue, recovery, and support efforts following the attacks. They did not understand the magnitude of what had happened but simply knew there was a job to do and people who needed them.
As a veterinary hospital, we are especially reminded today of the extraordinary bond between people and animals and of just how much courage, loyalty, and service can come on four paws.
Today we remember them all.
The lives lost.
The first responders.
The families.
The handlers.
And the four-legged heroes who searched beside them.
May we never forget the bravery shown that day and in the difficult days and months that followed
