We're seeing a lot of ehrlichia and anaplasmosis exposure in pets recently. This is a reminder to be diligent in using tick prevention, and check your pet often:

Lone star and blacklegged ticks can spread bacteria through bites, which may cause ehrlichiosis.

FIP in cats was a terminal diagnosis until just recently. Now a new drug, along with Remdesivir means a great chance of survival. We've had a few cases since the new drugs became available and our patients are quickly returning to normal, with a 100% survival rate. It's great to see medicine advance so dramatically turning a fatal disease into something treatable with just a few visits to the vet and a handful of pills.

Dr. Chau says that she is seeing a significant increase in Ehrlichiosis and Anaplasmosis in pets... much more than 15 years ago. Both can cause vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea. Please continue to use tick protection and double check your pets after hikes or being in the woods.

Safety of your pet is our top priority, which is why we are one of the only facilities in N. VA with automated rebreather machines (the kind that were critical during COVID.) We see twice as many dental patients as average hospitals and many of them are senior pets primarily due to our reputation for safety. Its no wonder that many of the horse vets in our area use us as their primary care doctor for their own pets.
