🐴 **WHAT EXACTLY IS EQUINE BEMER, AND WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?**

You've probably seen horses wearing those funny-looking blankets or those orange suitcases and wondered what they're all about!

Well, there's some pretty interesting science behind them.

BEMER uses a specialized form of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) technology designed to support microcirculation, the movement of blood through the body's smallest blood vessels.

**Why does that matter?**

Think of microcirculation as the body's delivery and cleanup system. These tiny blood vessels help bring oxygen and nutrients to our cells while carrying away carbon dioxide and other metabolic waste products.

An important part of this process is something called *vasomotion*, the natural rhythmic movement of small blood vessel walls that helps regulate blood flow.

BEMER technology is designed to influence this activity, although researchers are still studying how effectively it does so in horses.

**And there's some encouraging equine research!**

In a 2022 study at Colorado State University, researchers evaluated BEMER blanket therapy in eight horses experiencing back pain.

After treatment, they observed improvements in measures of back pain sensitivity, spinal flexibility, and postural stability.

That's exciting! It's also worth noting that this was a small preliminary study without a control group, so further research is needed.

**What does this mean for your horse?**

I’m excited to share something that started with my horse Ruby and has grown into something I hope will mean a lot to other horse people.

After losing Ruby, I reached out to my good friend Kristin at Bucca Beads to make a bracelet from her tail hair. Something I could wear and keep a little part of her with me.

As I shared it with people, I kept hearing, “I wish I would have done that sooner.”

It got me thinking. We spend years building these relationships with our horses. Why do we wait until they’re gone to create something that celebrates what they mean to us?

🐴 This month's newsletter is a little different than usual.
A few weeks ago we lost our polo mare Ruby, and it hit harder than I expected. So this issue is about that — grieving a horse, and the kind of loss that people don't always understand unless they've lived it themselves.
I asked several close friends and colleagues, a therapist and an animal communicator, both of whom knew Ruby, to share their perspective too. There's some real comfort in here, and some practical resources if you're going through something similar.
