Summer is here, and a few small things go a long way in keeping our pets cool and content.

Here are five gentle reminders for a comfy season:

🏡: Home is the coolest place to be! On hot days, leave them home rather than in the car.
🐾 Before a walk, rest your hand on the pavement. If it's too warm for you, it's too warm for their paws.
✂️ Resist the big summer shave, their coat actually helps protect them from the sun.
🚶: Keep activity gentle and save walks for the cooler early mornings or evenings.
💧: Always keep fresh, cool water within reach.

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) used to be a diagnosis that broke every cat lover’s heart. But medicine has changed, and today, there is immense hope. 💜😻

If you own a cat, foster kittens, or run a rescue, understanding FIP is one of the most powerful things you can do.

🔎It Starts with a Common Virus

Up to 80% of cats will get Feline Coronavirus (FCoV) in their lives, usually causing mild to no symptoms. In about 5-10% of cats, that virus mutates causing FIP. This most commonly occurs in young cats especially after recent adoption, spays and neuters, or other stressful events on their body. Because this mutation is needed, FIP itself is not contagious to other cats.

Some signs to monitor for could be lethargy, appetite changes, weight loss, bloated abdomen, poor balance/coordination, plus many more.

🎉The Big News: It can be treatable!

For decades, FIP was considered 100% fatal. Today, revolutionary antiviral treatments boast an incredible 80% to 90% success rate, which has helped many cats continue to live normal lives. 🐾 💟

This handsome guy stopped by Amethyst Veterinary Clinic for a recheck appointment, and he completely melted our hearts. Jojo is such a strong reminder of how far veterinary medicine has come!

Jojo is currently undergoing treatment for FIP (Feline Infectious Perotinitis) and is doing better than ever! 💪
