As prey species, rodents are hard wired to hide signs of vulnerability that include and .

It is important as veterinary professionals or pet owners to familiarise ourselves with rodent body language and behaviour. This way, we will recognise and understand when they are unwell or in pain or distress.

Is there anything on this list that you didn’t realise could be a sign of pain? 🙏🏻

I know I mention pain in rodents a lot 😅 but it is important that we recognise these signs. Not only for the welfare of our small pets or patients, but to quicker recognise illnesses or injuries in the early stages, often increasing the likelihood of curative treatment! 🙌🏻

Unlike us humans, it is perfectly normal for mice and rats to have yellowish-orange teeth! 🦷 🐭

It is a common trait for many rodents. For example, gerbils and hamsters have yellowish coloured enamel too. However, this colouring is not normal for all rodents. In fact, it is considered abnormal for guinea pigs to have yellow-orange teeth, and may even be an indication of trauma or infection.

Therefore it is very important to know what is normal and what isn’t for each species! 🙂
