During the 2015-2016 winter season, an urgent plea was sent out on Facebook asking for assistance with washing the mounds of dirty (and very smelly) blankets that were piling up at the local shelter. Armed with a pickup truck, some laundry supplies and quarters, my daughter, one of my granddaugthers and me set out to wash dirty laundry every Sunday morning. Thanks to the people that started to fol
low us on Facebook that first season, we were able to clean between 80 - 125 loads of blankets every weekend. They were instrumental in supporting us with funds to purchase laundry supplies as well as quarters for the washers and dryers. The three of us and our supporters who continued providing funding and the all important laundry supplies. Little did we know that our East Side Elves group was going to become a reality! We put out a plea for anyone that was looking for a good time helping us on Sunday mornings by washing blankets to join our fun at the laundromat. What happened next was and is still an amazing story of community spirit. Our little group of 3 has grown to 18-20 Elves that show up every Sunday when it's cold to do laundry! This past winter, the East Side Elves successfully cleaned and returned over 4,500 loads of blankets to the shelter so our temporary guests had warm/clean blankets to lay on. (This is in addition to the laundry that was able to be processed at the shelter). We don't want to stop at just laundry. You see, our shelter pets also benefit tremendously when we help provide collars, leashes, toys, training treats, enrichment activities to help them remain entertained while in their kennels. Our group has a much bigger plan now but we need you, the Facebook community, local, regional and national supporters that are able to help us by donating to our cause.
