We get asked quite often, βHow do you clean your stands?β And honestly, thatβs a really good question!
Because of the potential for toxins, we NEVER use chemicals to seal or βwaterproofβ the natural wood. We do apply a little caulking along the base where the white melamine meets the brown pine. This helps protect the raw edges of the melamine from those occasional little water spills.
So, what do we actually do when our own stands need a good cleaning?
Pretty simple! π
We use a basic paint scraper to loosen up any dried-on food and debris, then wipe the melamine down with basic disinfectant wipes.
But over the years, we discovered something that works even better for protecting the bottom of the stand β turf!
Yep⦠a piece of turf cut to fit the base.
It helps protect the bottom, but more importantly, it gives food and those inevitable little βgiftsβ π a soft place to land instead of bouncing off the bottom of the stand and onto the floor.
And heyβ¦ it adds a nice little splash of color too! π
When itβs time to clean, just pull the turf out, spray it off, let it dry, and put it right back down. Easy!
BUT β and this is important β NEVER hose down the stand!
Dry wood + water = π³π₯ DISASTER!!!
These pictures are of one of our 4-year-old stands belonging to Louie, our Rose-Breasted Cockatoo. It was definitely due for a good cleaning, and I happened to have some leftover turf sitting around.
So I gave it a good scraping, cleaned everything up, cut the turf to fit, and this was the final result!
Not bad for a 4-year-old stand! β€οΈ
So there you have it β this is how we recommend cleaning and protecting one of our stands.
Simple, inexpensive, easy to maintain, and your floor stays a whole lot cleaner too! ππ¦
