With 3 hours left until the deadline, only 1 dogs has left the building today.

Brinley is one of the urgent dogs who is still waiting. At 6 years old and around 70 pounds, she is a sweet, affectionate, smiley girl who deserves a home.

In three hours, we need Brinley and our 16 other urgent dogs to leave the shelter through adoption, long-term foster, or rescue. The vast majority of them are dog-friendly. Several have done well with children. Brinley herself has done well with other dogs in playgroup, and with slow introductions after decompression, she could do wonderfully in a home.

Please give these dogs a chance. They deserve it. And they have less than 3 hours đź’”

This morning, staff and volunteers arrived and got to work. Pawparazzi photos. Playgroups. Clean kennels. Breakfast, medications, walks, enrichment.

From the outside, it looks like a normal Saturday morning.
But it doesn’t feel normal.

There were 25 urgent dogs this week. Only 7 are safe.
That means 18 dogs are still waiting for someone to open their home and give them a chance.

Donald is one of them.

Right now, he’s in playgroup, taking a break from the rambunctious fun to enjoy what we affectionately call the “salad bar.” He doesn’t know what a deadline means. He doesn’t know why the humans around him are carrying a little more weight today.

He’s just being Donald.

Goofy. Affectionate. Sweet. Nearly 80 pounds of teddy bear.
Donald has a huge fan club among our volunteers, and it’s easy to see why. He’s around 2 years old and just a genuinely wonderful dog.

And Donald isn’t a difficult placement.

That’s what makes this week especially heartbreaking. Some weeks, our urgent dogs need very specific homes. This week, the vast majority of these 18 dogs are easy placements. Dogs who simply need someone to say, “Yes. You can come home with me.”

We’ve posted. We’ve advocated. We’ve told our friends and neighbors.

But we can’t make someone open their home.

So we’re asking.

We know it’s a holiday weekend. But intake doesn’t stop. Dogs don’t stop struggling. Kennels still need cleaning. Food and medical care still need to be provided. And our teams are still stretched thin by overcrowding.

These dogs were originally supposed to have until Thursday night.

We’ve bought them two more days.

Their new and final deadline is TODAY at 6PM.

If you can foster or adopt, please come to the shelter. You don’t have to know which dog is right for you. Let us help you find your match.

Donald is waiting. Seventeen others are waiting, too.

They don’t need you to save all of them.

They just need you to save one.

This is not the update we wanted to give you.

This week, we started with 25 urgent dogs. That’s a high number, but it’s a number we’ve managed before.

What we haven’t seen before is this.

Not a single urgent dog left on Wednesday. And when Thursday’s 7PM deadline arrived, only 5 had found placement.

That left 20 dogs scheduled to be euthanized.

Twenty.

We extended their deadline to Friday at 7PM, hoping that—like so many times before—the vast majority would find a way out.

Today, only 2 more dogs left.

18 dogs remain.

Due to these numbers and the holiday weekend, we have extended their deadline one final time: Saturday, September 5 at 6PM.

We know you’ve heard “final extension” before. We know extensions have happened before. But we cannot push this into Sunday. We simply do not have the space.

There are currently 510 dogs in the building—35 over our maximum humane capacity.

And please understand: these are not 18 “unadoptable” dogs.

These are good dogs. Most are dog-friendly. A couple have done well with children. They are just dogs who need someone to say, “I’ll give them a chance.”

We don’t want to euthanize them. Our staff and volunteers know these dogs. They care about them. They have spent time with them, walked them, loved them, advocated for them. There is an enormous emotional toll every time a dog reaches this point; this process is exhausting for staff, volunteers, and members of the community. We know that. But these dogs deserve for us to keep fighting.

And right now, this weekend, 18 dogs need placement by tomorrow night.

So please show up.

We want a LINE at our doors when we open at 11AM Saturday. Come meet the urgent dogs. Talk to our staff and volunteers. Ask questions. Find the dog who might be your next best friend.

We’d ask you not to wait until the last minute, but it already is the last minute.

Please don’t assume someone else will come.

Be that someone.

And please—do not wait until 6PM tomorrow.

Giselle is only 24 pounds, and is around a year old. She is a very playful puppy and would love a home can give her the structure, routine, and space to thrive. We believe Giselle would thrive most in a home without other dogs or young children. She is affectionate, go-lucky, and goofy. We’d love to see her blossom in a home.

We started this week with 25 urgent dogs. In just two days, only five found placement.

That means 20 dogs are still waiting. 20 dogs who reached their original deadline without anyone stepping forward for them.

Their deadlines have now been extended in the hope that more of them can find a way out. They have until 7PM on Friday, September 4 to find placement through foster, adoption, or a rescue pull.

And this list is full of wonderful dogs who want nothing more than the chance to decompress outside of a shelter and have people to love.

There’s Giselle, who weighs under 25 pounds. There’s Achilles, who weighs over 120. And there’s just about every size, age, personality, and type in between.

If you tuned into the live, you got to watch Potsticker, She Coca, Donald, Kovalan, Germany, March Ice, Silva, Kass, Melany, Zoomer, Shoe String, and Galleon enjoying playgroup. Several other dogs on this list are dog-friendly too, even if playgroup just isn’t their thing.

Ending Thursday night with 20 dogs still waiting is disheartening. But we are not giving up on them.

You can’t save all 20 by yourself.

But can you save one?

Can you give one dog the chance to decompress, feel safe, and finally thrive outside of the shelter? Can you be one small piece of a happy ending?

Get ready for an urgent dog playgroup LIVE! Today on Instagram at 5PM!

If you are interested in meeting some of our dog-friendly urgent pups, please tune in on instagram! This will be a great opportunity to see these babies in action, ask questions, and boost visibility so that even MORE people will see our urgent dogs.

Whether you have space to bring home a dog or not, joining us for the LIVE is a great way to help get our pups seen.

March Ice is running out of time.

Sometimes dogs open up in the shelter. They just need a moment to get adjusted to the stressful environment. And other dogs, like March Ice, stay shut down. It’s heartbreaking, because we only get to see glimpses of who they might be outside of the shelter.

March Ice is terrified, and she’s been this way since arriving to the shelter. Affection makes her nervous. She’s always looking for a way to escape. When this video was taken, she was in a play yard full of people and dogs. But rather than playing, she just wanted to stand by the fenceline, day dreaming about being anywhere but the shelter.

This sweet, timid girl is around 5 years old and 51 pounds. While she has lived with children before, her handling sensitivities and shy/fearful behavior make us believe that, for right now, she would do best in a home without children, or with older children who can respect her boundaries and give her space. Physical affection, quick movements, and a fast-paced home would all be too much for her right now.

March Ice deserves the chance to thrive outside of the shelter. If you can give you the time, space, and love she needs to decompress and open up, please come meet her TODAY. Her euthanasia deadline is 7PM tonight. She needs long-term placement, whether through foster, adoption, or a rescue-pull.

We know that in the right home, March Ice would blossom and become an incredibly loyal companion. She just needs time.

When Carinthia's former 'Dog for the Day' fosters learned that she had received a deadline, they immediately sent us these photos with the hopes that they'll get her seen and chosen ❤ So of course we had to share.

Carinthia has been at the shelter since May, and despite struggling to adjust to such a stressful environment, she has remained a sweet and gentle girl. She is only around a year old, and needs so much more than a shelter can provide. We would love to see her get the opportunity to thrive in a home.

At only around 41 pounds, Carinthia might get a little bigger, but she's definitely always going to be petite. She's extremely snuggly, walks beautifully on the leash, and has captured the hearts of so many.

Despite being so young, she is not very playful with other dogs, and is therefore not a candidate for playgroup. In the right environment, with decompression and slow introductions, she could learn to well with a furry friend. She just needs a calm, low-key companion who is happier with peaceful coexistence than rough-and-tumble play.

The following dogs have been scheduled for euthanasia on Thursday, September 3 at 7PM. They need long-term placement, whether through foster, adoption, or a rescue-pull.
