It's a little after 4 PM, and we have just 3 hours left. Five urgent dogs are still waiting for placement by 7 PM tonight. 💔

We want to introduce you to two of those five: Primo and Zircon. Both are familiar faces in playgroup, both are loved by the people who know them, and both deserve the chance to be so much more than a dog waiting in a kennel.

🐾 Primo is estimated to be 6 years old and weighs 51 pounds. He used to join playgroup twice a week. He was never the rowdiest player, but he enjoyed being out there, and it was a joy to watch him have that time.

Then kennel stress began to take its toll. Eventually, Primo stopped enjoying playgroup, too. We made the difficult decision to stop bringing him because continuing to put him in an environment he no longer enjoyed didn't feel fair to him. That's the heartbreaking thing about kennel stress. It takes joy out of everything. 💔

🐾 Zircon is still having a BLAST in playgroup! He's a physical, rambunctious player who makes running around the yard an absolute joy to watch. 😂 We think he'd thrive in an adult-only home or one with older kids. He prefers to be the primary rambunctious child in the household! 😉

He's also neutered and heartworm negative, making him one less step away from starting his next chapter. He has so much potential, and we want to see him get the opportunity to thrive.

They're not alone. Melvin, Anubis, and FrySauce are also still waiting. Five dogs. Five lives worth saving. Five dogs who deserve the chance to discover who they can be when shelter life is no longer all they know.

Out of the 9 original urgent dogs, 3 have found placement; Bebe, Sutton, and Lyric have been adopted.

This leaves 6 dogs who did not make it out by their original deadline of Thursday at 7PM. However, their euthanasia deadlines have been extended, and they now have until Friday, October 16 at 7PM to find long-term placement, whether through foster, adoption, or a rescue-pull.

Anubis and Primo are volunteer favorites who are incredibly loving and affectionate. Hobo and Zircon have silly, goofy personalities, and you just can't help but fall in love. And Melvin and FrySauce, despite being stressed at the shelter, are still holding onto hope that someone is coming for them.

It’s almost 2 PM, and only 1 of the original 9 urgent dogs has left the building. This leaves 8 dogs who desperately need placement by 7 PM TONIGHT.

If you’ve considered fostering or adopting, please consider this video your sign. 🥺 Melvin, Anubis, Primo, Hobo, FrySauce, Lyric, Zircon, and Sutton are all patiently waiting for their happy ending. Each has different needs, different personalities, and different preferences… which means that no matter your lifestyle or circumstances, it’s very likely that one of them could be the right fit for your home.

Please don’t wait until the end of the day. Come visit us TODAY. You don’t have to know which dog you want to meet before you arrive. You don’t have to have all the answers. This week, 9 wonderful dogs at DeKalb County Animal Services have received euthanasia deadlines. And if there’s one thing we know about these dogs, it’s that they have some pretty incredible fans here at the shelter. They’ve also given us some ADORABLE photos. 🥹

So, in the spirit of celebrating these pups for the wonderful dogs they are, we wanted to share some of our favorite photos of our urgent dogs, along with the superlative we’d give each of them. Because every dog has something special about them, and these 9 are no exception. ❤️

But as much as we love celebrating them, we desperately want to see them celebrated by their own families, too. Each of these dogs deserves the chance to be more than a favorite face at the shelter. They deserve a home, a person to call their own, and the chance to be loved for everything that makes them special.

Today, we wanted to take a moment to highlight a very special, very resilient dog named Hooper 🥺

Hooper came into our care back in August as part of an active court case, a victim in a situation completely out of his control. Thankfully, he was released fairly quickly, which means this handsome fella is now available for adoption.

Still a puppy at only 9 months old, Hooper needs a home that can give him the safety, structure, routine, and LOVE that he so desperately needs. Dogs his age are typically higher-energy and considered the 'teenagers' of the doggy development stage, and while they take work and intentionality, it is so rewarding watching them blossom.

Hooper is dog-friendly with a gentle play style. He really is just a hyper, loving puppy who would absolutely thrive outside of the shelter environment. He's only around 43 pounds right now, and while he might get a bit bigger, it likely won't be by too much.

The following dogs are scheduled for euthanasia on Thursday, October 15 at 7PM. They need long-term placement, whether through foster, adoption, or a rescue-pull.

There are some really wonderful dogs on the list, some of which have had deadlines before 💔 Staff favorites, volunteer favorites. Snugglers, and more independent-types. If you've been considering fostering or adopting, we would love to chat with you about your home and lifestyle and see if one of these pups would be a good fit for your home.

Yesbubble is here to remind you that today our shelter is 30+ dogs over capacity, and every Tuesday as we try to get numbers as low as possible, dog adoptions are FREE!

Yesbubble is only a puppy at around 7 months, and she weighs 37 pounds. She is one of the over 500 dogs sitting in our shelter right now who would LOVE to go home with you. Even a short, 3-4 night foster makes such a difference on our shelter.

If you are interested in fostering or adopting, we urge you to come to the shelter. We would love to chat with you about your home and lifestyle, and help you pick the pet who is the best match for you.

It’s almost 6PM, and not a single urgent dog has made it out over the past two days.

That means 17 dogs are still waiting. 17 dogs who are URGENTLY in need of long-term placement in order to avoid euthanasia.

And tonight, our staff are refusing to give up on them.

They have volunteered to stay open an additional hour, giving these babies until 8PM to find the people who will change everything for them.

They need a long-term commitment — whether that means foster, adoption, or a rescue pull. They don’t need someone to “save them for now.” They need someone willing to open their home and give them a real chance at a future.

If you’re interested in one of these pups, please come in person. Our staff would love to meet you, learn more about your home and lifestyle, and help you figure out which dog might be the best match. You don’t have to know exactly who you want to meet — just come. ❤️

Not a single urgent dog left yesterday, meaning we have 17 dogs who need long term placement by 7pm tonight 💔

Pups don’t understand the concept of kennel stress. They don’t know what it means to have a deadline, or be running out of time. They just know that every day, slowly, they’re forgetting what life outside of the shelter is like.

They’re forgetting what real rest feels like. What it’s like to sleep in a bed. What it’s like to have regular walks and exercise. What it’s like to be chosen and loved.

And it’s heartbreaking to watch them forget.

Every single pup who has been given a deadline is experiencing some sort of stress here at the shelter. Some are stressed more than others, but the reality is that each of these wonderful companions will need decompression. They’ll need patience. They’ll need time to forget about the shelter, and remember what it’s like to be a dog.

If you’re interested in fostering or adopting, please come to the shelter ASAP. Fosters must live in the state of Georgia and are expected to come to the shelter in person to meet the pet and chat with staff. Local adopters should also plan to come in person. These are 5 of this week’s 17 urgent dogs. Seventeen dogs who are all deserving of a second chance. Seventeen dogs who want the same things we all do: to feel chosen, to know love, and to have a place to call home. Seventeen dogs who are still refusing to give up hope.

We have nearly 500 dogs physically in our shelter, with another 500 in foster homes. That’s 1,000 dogs in ONE county in Atlanta. We can provide shelter, medical care, food, enrichment, and love. But what these dogs truly need is something we simply cannot provide: a home.

But you can.

If you’ve ever considered opening your home to a rescue dog, please consider this your sign. These 17 dogs have a euthanasia deadline of TOMORROW, Thursday at 7PM. NOT because they are bad dogs. NOT because we don’t love them. But because we are out of space, and we have to maintain humane conditions for the pets entrusted to our care.

Shelters can never replace a loving home. When dogs begin to decline under the stress of shelter life, it is heartbreaking—but it is also real.

We need homes. Foster homes. Adoptive homes. Our rescue partners are willing to help, but they need homes, too.

You don’t have to offer perfection. You just have to offer a chance: a quiet place to decompress, feel safe, and remember what life is like outside of a shelter kennel.

Maybe Nelson is exactly the dog you’ve been looking for. Maybe you meet Scotty and feel an instant connection. Maybe Frito chooses you. Maybe Tweety brings exactly the kind of joy your home has been missing.
