When we open at 11:00 AM this morning (June 23), we will have 529 dogs physically in our building. That puts us 54 dogs over our humane capacity goal of 475.

We urgently need fosters and adopters to help bring that number down before 7:00 PM tonight. Even a short-term foster—just 2 or 3 nights—can make a lifesaving difference.

Every single dog who leaves our shelter today moves us one step closer to a safer, more humane population level. And if we ultimately have to create a space-related euthanasia list this week, every dog who goes home means one less dog facing a deadline.

And our challenge doesn't end when the doors open. Intake continues throughout the day. We still expect Animal Enforcement trucks to arrive, and we know we'll continue to receive stray animals and owner surrenders. The 529 dogs in our building this morning is not a static number—it will continue to change, and without enough dogs leaving, it will continue to grow.

Whether you foster or adopt a puppy, a senior, a shy dog, an easy-going pup, or any dog at all, every dog out saves a life. The best thing you can do for our shelter AND your home is choose the dog who is the best fit for your lifestyle. It's far easier—and more sustainable—for our community to say yes now than to wait until a dog has a deadline attached to their name.

Playgroup is the highlight of everyone’s week—especially these three! 🐾

Luthen and Rambutan (our two light-brown pups) are the best of friends, spending every playgroup session chasing, wrestling, and having the time of their lives. Lorikeet (the black pup) is the social butterfly of the bunch, always ready to make a new friend and join in the fun.

Our Behavior Team does an incredible job evaluating each dog’s personality, play style, and social skills to help create safe, successful playgroups. While we don’t offer dog-to-dog meet-and-greets with resident pets, our team would be happy to talk with you about your dog’s play style and help identify shelter dogs who would be a great match.

And we have to give a special spotlight to Rambutan. ❤️

When Rambutan first joined playgroup, he wore a muzzle while he learned how to interact appropriately with other dogs. Since then, he has made remarkable progress and blossomed into one of our most dog-friendly pups. Today, Rambutan is a playgroup favorite, known for his energetic, vocal, and physical play style that keeps both dogs and staff entertained.

But despite how far he has come, Rambutan is still waiting for a chance to leave the shelter behind. He has been with us since December and is currently at risk of euthanasia due to severe kennel stress. The shelter environment has become increasingly difficult for him, and we know he would thrive in a foster or adoptive home where he can finally relax, decompress, and show off the wonderful dog he truly is.

Rambutan has worked so hard to get where he is today. Now he just needs someone to give him a chance.

This month, we’re highlighting our foster program: our incredible foster homes, our dedicated foster team, and the amazing dogs whose lives have been changed because someone said “yes” to fostering.

If you’ve ever wondered whether fostering really makes a difference, look no further than Walker.

In the summer of 2024, Walker was placed on the euthanasia list. Part of the reason was lack of space. Part of it was the toll shelter life was taking on him. He was struggling, becoming increasingly stressed and difficult to handle, and his future was running out of time.

Then, on the very last day before his deadline, Lauren stopped by the shelter.

Walker was overwhelmed, stressed, and far from showing his best self. But Lauren looked beyond the shelter environment and saw a dog worth saving. She took a chance on him. It was her first time fostering…ever.

For the next year and a half, Lauren poured her heart into Walker. She worked extensively on training, brought him to adoption events, shared his story online, and made sure he always had a safe place to stay. Despite being dog-, kid-, and cat-friendly, Walker continued to be overlooked.

Many people would have become discouraged, but Lauren never stopped believing his family was out there.

And then, after more than 18 months in foster care, a family in Florida saw his story and instantly knew he was their dog.

One thing Walker’s new mom said has stayed with us ever since:

“Nobody took him because we were meant to find him.”

Saved from a euthanasia list. More than a year and a half in foster care. Hundreds of days of patience, dedication, and hope.

None of it was wasted.

And that’s why fostering matters.

Because fostering gave Walker time when he had run out of it.

Because fostering gave him the chance to decompress, heal, learn, and show the world who he truly was.

Because fostering gave him an advocate who refused to give up on him.

Because fostering turned a dog with a euthanasia deadline into a beloved family member.

Walker’s story could have ended in the summer of 2024.

Instead, because someone fostered, he got the happy ending he deserved. ❤️

You've heard of a couch potato...but what about a couch princess? 👀👑

Meet Iggy! This 100-pound snuggle-bug is thoroughly enjoying her time in foster, but we would LOVE to find her a family to call her own.

Iggy doesn't just look like a princess—she is one, and she knows it. She's got a few expectations for her future home and isn't quite willing to compromise. If you're interested in becoming her castle, here's what Her Royal Highness is looking for:

✅ MINIMAL exercise. Iggy has perfected the art of lounging and would prefer to keep it that way. She's happy to go for a leisurely walk, but don't expect her to train for a marathon.

✅ Comfy couch/dog bed. Iggy takes her relaxation very seriously. A cozy couch, dog bed, or both is required. Non-negotiable.

✅ CONFIDENT handlers. Iggy's a big, strong girl, and she knows it. She needs people who are comfortable handling a dog her size and can provide consistent guidance.

✅ Routine. Like many princesses, Iggy thrives on a predictable schedule filled with naps, snuggles, lounging, and being adored. A home with a consistent routine and familiar people would suit her best.

✅ Older, dog-savvy kids. Iggy likes to be the center of attention and appreciates having her space respected. Older children who understand dog boundaries are her kind of people.

✅ Belly-rubs. Again, non-negotiable. She insisted that this be included.

In return, Iggy offers championship-level cuddles, endless companionship, and a royal presence that will make your couch feel complete. ❤️

Update: ADOPTED!

Desmo has been in our care for just over a month, and there’s no sugarcoating it: he’s sad to be here, and we can’t blame him.

Our behavior team hoped that getting him in playgroup with other pups would cheer him up, but all he did was sit on the fence 🥺 We’ll keep bringing him out, hoping to see improvement, but at the end of the day he just needs a home.

Desmo is around 2 years old and around 63 pounds. He’s lower energy, affectionate once he gets to know you, and walks beautifully on the leash. He’s dog-friendly, but as you can see from the video, he’s not interested in interacting or playing. He would do well with another dog who can help him learn to play, but is gentle and not overly physical.

Meet Inverness! This sweet boy recently went out for Weekend Warrior and came back with absolutely wonderful notes. Here are some of the things his short-term fosters had to say about him:

✅ Very gentle and polite on the leash
✅ Seems to be completely house-trained
✅ Very snuggly...he thinks he's a lap dog 👀
✅ Knows basic commands

Here at the shelter, we've found Inverness to be dog-friendly with a loose, wiggly, and energetic play style. Overall, he's just a gentle boy with a lot of love to give, to humans and other dogs alike. We believe he's around 3 years old, and he weighs just under 60 pounds.

Max Ozuna is officially on his way to rescue! ❤️

We often get questions about what it means when a dog is labeled “rescue-only.” Simply put, it means that the dog is not available for public adoption or foster, and will instead be placed through a rescue organization.

This designation is never made lightly. Dogs are only made rescue-only after careful consideration and when we truly believe it’s in their best interest. Sometimes, a dog may exhibit breed-specific behaviors or need specialized behavioral support that a breed-focused rescue is uniquely equipped to provide. Other times, a dog may have medical needs that are best managed with the resources, experience, and support network that rescues can offer.

For Max Ozuna, it was a combination of factors. He has some significant medical needs and also needed extra behavioral support, particularly when it came to taking his medications and receiving medical care. We knew that the best chance for long-term success would be through a rescue placement where he could receive the individualized care and attention he deserves.

Being rescue-only does not mean a dog is “bad,” dangerous, or unadoptable. In fact, it often means the opposite: we’re taking the time to find the safest, most appropriate placement for that dog’s unique needs.

Rescue partnerships allow dogs like Max to leave the shelter environment and continue their journey toward a permanent home without having to wait indefinitely in a kennel.

Thankfully, a wonderful rescue and dedicated foster stepped up for Max, and he’s now headed toward the happy ending we’ve all been hoping for. 🐾

Congratulations, Max Ozuna. We’re so excited to watch your next chapter begin. ❤️

🚨🚨🚨 Urgent dog update!

Remember Brooklyn?

This sweet boy has been in foster care for several weeks now, after receiving a deadline here at the shelter and urgently needing a home. His foster is doing a wonderful job letting him decompress, feel safe, and remember that being a dog is supposed to be fun.

Brooklyn is a fantastic pup, and we would LOVE to get him adopted. He's estimated to be between 1 and 2 years old, and is pretty petite at around 46 pounds. Here are some more highlights about this handsome fella:

✨ Picked up potty-training really quickly
✨ Has done well with children
✨ Dog friendly!
