You Just Saved a Rescue Dog—Now What? Happy National Rescue Dog Day! 🐾
May 20 is National Rescue Day
Bringing a new rescue dog home is such an incredible act of kindness. In honor of National Rescue Dog Day this May 20th, I wanted to share some tips for anyone who has just added a new companion to their family.
I know that the first few days can feel overwhelming, often, new adopters aren't sure how to prioritize when their new companion is still nervous or unsure. The most important thing to remember? It’s not about perfection, it’s about PATIENCE!
✨ The 3-3-3 Rule is your best friend:
🤍3 Days: Decompression. Don't worry about training yet. Let them find their footing in their new safe space.
🩷3 Weeks: Routine. They are learning your schedule and starting to feel like they belong.
♥️3 Months: Bonding. This is when their true personality really begins to shine.
👀Focus on the Bond, Not Just Commands
Skip the pressure of formal obedience. Instead, focus on building trust. Use gentle, clear communication, to build impulse control, that prioritizes their state of mind and helps them feel safe.
🏡Create a Safe Haven
Every rescue/ shelter dog needs a "home base" a quiet, consistent spot where they can go to simply be. When the world feels too big, having a sanctuary makes all the difference.

As of today, May 12, both Fulton and DeKalb County shelters, managed by LifeLine Animal Project, are in need of homes for a combined 62 dogs. That means at least 62 dogs need to leave the shelters by 7pm tonight to help us avoid making heartbreaking decisions.

If you’ve been thinking about fostering or adopting, this is your sign.

Every single dog who leaves today makes a difference — whether it’s a gentle senior, a playful puppy, or an “easy-button” companion ready to fit right into your home.

We give these dogs everything we can: food, medical care, enrichment, and so much love. But the one thing we cannot give them is a home of their own.

That part has to come from someone like you.

Both shelters are open until 7pm tonight. Visit the location nearest you, talk with our staff, and meet a dog who could change your life just as much as you change theirs. By fostering or adopting one pup, you’re also helping create space and hope for the nearly 1,000 other dogs still waiting for their chance, in just these two shelters alone (not including those already in foster).

They all deserve better, if you thought ABOUT ADOPTING A DOG OR A CAT for a long time, you thought it through and you understand that when you adopt an animal is For the Entire Life of the animal, you also understand some of the changes and responsibilities that come with having one, then you are ready to ADOPT! Go talk to a volunteer that knows the dogs and they will do their best to match you with a dog that FITS YOUR LIFE STYLE!
