Habronemiasis aka Summer Sores

1. Caused when Habronema larvae are laid by stable or house flies with a wound, sore or other mucosa.
2. Commonly found around the lips, eyes, sheath and lower limbs.
3. Can become a chronic problem that recurs each year.
4. The body has a large inflammatory reaction creating sulfur granules that are yellow in appearance.
5. Deworming with ivermectin and use of steroids can help but often debridement is needed first to remove those granules.
6. If possible, keep the area covered while healing.
7. Fly control and manure removal can help reduce recurrences.

We now have the ability to run ACTH and insulin in house! 😍 The cost of the tests to you will not go up and this will allow us to get results back quicker. This is not a stall side test, meaning we will need to take blood back to the office to process and run. We have approximately 10 grazing muzzles free. A few different sizes and brands. They are used but seem to be in good shape, just need cleaned up. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE.

The sun sure looks cool this morning but the air quality is awful. Don't ride today. It isn't worth it. I think yesterday morning the AQI was in the high 50s. Now look at where we are. We will be out on the road today, but we won't be asking horses to exert themselves very much.

Air quality is going to be poor over the next few days due to smoke from Canadian wildfires. Please be careful riding your horses during this time, especially if they have asthma. It's also HOT. Please let us know if you have any questions!

🔥 Wildfire Smoke & Horse Health 🐴💨

Poor air quality can be harmful not only to us but our horses too. Smoke from wildfires can irritate a horse's respiratory system and cause fatigue, coughing, difficulty breathing, etc.

You can monitor local air quality at www.airnow.gov. During periods of poor air quality, you can protect your horse's health by:

🐎 Limiting or avoiding exercise.
💧 Providing free access to fresh water.
💦 Controlling dust such as watering dry lots and soaking or feeding dust-free hay.
🕰 Allowing time for recovery: airway damage from wildfire smoke takes 4 to 6 weeks to heal after air quality returns to normal.
☎️ Consult your vet if you notice signs of smoke irritation.

🚨 Updated Rx Protocol 🚨

Starting August 1st, 2026 we will no longer be filling prescriptions through outside pharmacies. HOWEVER, if you wish to purchase from an outside pharmacy, we will provide you with a prescription. You will need to turn this in yourself and handle all interactions with Chewy, Valley Vet, etc.

Below is a picture of a QR code to our online pharmacy and a link. It is set up to match prices as closely as possible with the big box stores. If you find something that is markedly different let us know so we can check into that. Or you can purchase and pick up directly from the clinic. We realize a lot of equine medications are very expensive and we will do the best we can to be price competitive.

We will not be taking away your ability to buy medications from wherever you so choose. What we are changing is CEVS staff having to spend large amounts of time in contact with these big box companies. Those companies don't support us and it's our time and energy they are being rewarded with.

🔥 In case you didn't realize it, it's hot outside. 🔥 I have already seen a few AI generated, completely inaccurate infographics out there on the best way to cool your horse down. Prior to the '96 Atlanta Olympics, a large amount of research was done on how to protect our equine athletes from overheating. But let me know if you have questions.

1. Don't ride your horse during the heat of the day. If that means you have to get up early, so be it.

2. Give your horse plenty of breaks and let them drink water during the ride if they want. Do NOT limit their access to water.

3. Hose them off afterwards! Or even when you get home at the end of the day. Hosing with cool water from the tap is perfectly fine.

4. Fans are great, as are shelters. You can also add in electrolytes. Do NOT put those electrolytes in their only water source. Instead feed them to your horse in their grain or dose it orally.

5. Below is a study from 2020 and I can find some of the ones from the Atlanta Olympics if needed.

Researchers compared different methods: walking outside, continuous application of water, and intermittent application of water, with and without scraping.

🚨 Biosecurity 🚨

See below for some biosecurity tips to use when traveling off farm with your horse.

A few clarifications
1. I prefer a 3 week quarantine for any horse that was potentially exposed to a contagious disease.
2. Take your horses temperature at least once a day, ideally twice. It should be under 101.5F.
3. Many disinfectants don't work in the face of organic material (manure, dirt, etc). So you should wash buckets, etc with soapy water first, rinse well, then disinfect and allow to dry.

Dr Ott started with us this week and she has been an absolute rock star! Some of y'all have thrown some real ringers at her. We've had a few complicated lameness exams, a nasty laceration, a colic, a retained placenta AND a clostridial myositis.

We've also had some lovely routine vaccine and dental appointments. Dr Ott has already been able to acupuncture a few horses too! She even performed our version of brain surgery (castration) on a few!

Dr Oliver may be super excited to have help, but she is even more excited to have such a wonderful person joining her team. Dr Ott has been here a week and is already killing it. I can't wait for all of you to meet her.
