The Horse Shelter

The Horse Shelter The Horse Shelter is a 501c3 equine rescue located in Cerrillos, NM, with over 100 horses on-site.

The mission of The Horse Shelter is to serve as a sanctuary for New Mexico’s abandoned, abused and neglected horses. Rescued horses will be rehabilitated and adopted out whenever possible to environments that support their well-being and future long term care. The Horse Shelter has between 75 and 80 horses on site and adopts up to 30 horses per year into new homes. We have an onsite trainer that helps our horses get ready to go to new homes.

Meet Elijah. He is still new to us, having arrived from a life of fending for himself in the wilds of southern New Mexico. He must have had some handling in the past as he is gelded but humans aren’t high on his list of the best things in life.

That said, we aim to win his heart, body and soul cuz just look at how handsome he is (we would do the same even if he looked like mud). We think he has a bright future.

Want to see the difference that a little over a year can make in a young horse’s life? Meet Jax. He was part of the group of colts that were rescued from the Ruidoso fires and was pretty scruffy and unimpressive. His feet were long, his expression told you a sad story and yet… proper care, good buddies, and especially time, brought about this happy transformation.

We love this kind of stories! Go, team.

Dasher wants to bring to your attention a couple of things. One is that he is available for adoption and that good stuff comes in small packages, as evidenced by his robust physique and playful nature.

The other good stuff are the items that were donated to our fundraising luncheon but didn’t meet a minimum bid. Where do they go now? Why, of course, to our .resale store. So if you missed the luncheon but are in a mood to do a little shopping that also benefits horses like Dasher, head on over to the store.

Okay, kiddos, we did it!! Pulled off another spectacular, fun, festive, tasty and successful annual luncheon. Thank you to everyone who attended and bid on items, all the wonderful people and businesses who donated items and services, for the scrumptious food, the many many volunteers and staff that made it run like a hockey puck on ice, and all our horses who looked up at the big tent and said, oh that old thing again.

Pharaoh, such an amazing boy. He shouldn’t really be as happy and playful as he is, sparring with his paddock mates and gallivanting around in the sun but horses are good at adapting to the hard knocks that life delivers.

He came to us with an already badly set fracture in his upper right arm, which in turn may have contributed to the wonky angles in his left leg.His feet were a mess but with regular hoof care they are normalizing.

Pharaoh reminds us daily to never discount what is possible in the way of recovery and to live happily with what you’ve got.

Tuesday crew, you know who you are, and we hope you know how deeply you are appreciated. Certainly, our new volunteer coordinator Kevan Saunders knows you all by now and we are sure you are enjoying her enthusiasm for sharing her deep knowledge of horses and horsemanship. Yet another good reason to sign up for crew duties. - spending time with Kevan!
