What a fantastic opportunity it was to take part in Community Helper Week at Sand Rock Pre-K!

We had the opportunity to visit with these young students and talk about something that is often misunderstood — the role of Animal Control and the Animal Shelter in our community.

We talked about what Animal Control does, but more importantly, we talked about why we do it. We discussed the importance of never approaching or petting a strange dog or cat, recognizing warning signs in animals, bite prevention and mitigation, and why we should never approach or attempt to handle wildlife.

One of the biggest things I wanted these kids to understand is that Animal Control isn't just about picking up stray dogs. The primary function of Animal Control is public safety. We work to protect people from animals, protect animals from people, enforce animal-related laws, help prevent the spread of rabies and other diseases, and educate our community.

And honestly, what better place to start that education than in our schools?

Teaching a child how to safely interact with an animal today could prevent a bite tomorrow. Teaching them not to approach wildlife could keep them from getting hurt. Teaching them to ask permission before petting someone's dog can make a difference. These are simple lessons, but they can have a lifetime impact.

Education is one of the most important tools we have in Animal Control. You can't enforce your way out of every problem. Sometimes the best solution is making sure people understand the risks, understand the laws, and know what to do before a situation ever becomes a problem.

I truly appreciate Sand Rock Pre-K for inviting us to be part of Community Helper Week and allowing us to spend some time with these young students. They were absolutely wonderful, asked some great questions, and hopefully went home with a little more knowledge about animals and how to stay safe around them.

And to all the educators out there, if you would like for us to come speak to your school, classroom, or students, please never hesitate to reach out to us. It doesn't matter if you're teaching Pre-K, elementary, middle school, high school, or even older students. There are different lessons we can tailor to every age group, and we'd be more than happy to come talk about animal safety, responsible pet ownership, Animal Control, animal welfare, public safety, or whatever topic would benefit your students.

Public safety starts with education, and education starts with our kids.

A huge thank-you to the teachers and staff at Sand Rock Pre-K for giving us the opportunity to be a part of such a great week!

****Cinch Has Been Adopted****

🤠Saddle up, folks! Cinch is looking for his forever home!

And yes, he’s named Cinch after a saddle cinch… because this boy will be attached right to you!

Cinch is a sweet male who is heartworm negative and gets along great with other dogs. He’s the kind of fella that’s ready to ride sh***un, hang out by your side, and become your best friend.

If you’re looking for a loyal little cowboy to add to your family, come meet Cinch at the Cherokee County Animal Shelter!

Birdie is available for adoption!

Birdie is a sweet little 5-year-old girl weighing around 12 pounds. We believe she is a wire-haired terrier mix, and she has the personality to match!

This little girl is full of energy and absolutely loves attention. She loves being petted, held, and being right in the middle of whatever is going on. She also does great with other dogs, regardless of their size.

Birdie will be getting spayed and should be ready to go to her new home within the next week.

If you're looking for a small dog with a big personality, Birdie may be your girl!

🐾Shep is looking for his forever home!

Shep is currently available for adoption at the Cherokee County Animal Shelter, and this big boy is ready to find somebody to call his own.

Shep is around 5 years old and weighs about 85 pounds. Yes… he is a BIG boy. But don't let that size fool you — Shep is a very gentle guy with a sweet personality.

He is heartworm negative, neutered, current on all vaccinations and antiparasitics, and ready to go home.

We've had Shep outside with other dogs and he has done well with them. He seems to be perfectly comfortable around other dogs, but he's not particularly interested in playing with them. He's more of a “you do your thing, I'll do mine” kind of fellow.

If you're looking for a big, gentle companion who would rather hang out with you than get involved in everybody else's business, Shep might just be your guy.

Come meet Shep at the Cherokee County Animal Shelter and give this big fella a chance to show you what he's all about.

The Cherokee County Animal Shelter is looking at expanding our foster program, and we’re looking for people who are willing to open their homes and help an animal that needs a little extra time and attention.

And for those of you who have ever said, “Somebody needs to do something" well… here’s your chance!

Seriously, fostering can make a huge difference. Sometimes an animal just needs to get out of the shelter, have a quiet place to relax, learn what being in a home is all about, or simply have somebody spend a little extra time with them.

And we’ll help you with the supplies.

During the foster period, the shelter will provide:

🍖 Food
🏠 A crate when needed
🛏️ Blankets and basic supplies
🩺 Veterinary care

We’re looking for people interested in fostering adult dogs, puppies, entire litters, cats, mama cats with nursing kittens, and even bottle babies.

If you’ve got experience bottle feeding, or you’re willing to learn, please give us a call. Those little babies can be a lot of work, but they are also some of the most rewarding fosters you’ll ever have.

And one of the biggest things we want people to understand is that fostering does not mean you have to adopt. You’re simply giving an animal a safe place to stay while we work toward finding its forever home.

Will you get attached? Probably.

Will you tell yourself, “I’m not keeping this one”? Almost certainly.

But every foster home gives us another opportunity to help an animal that needs us.

If you’ve ever wanted to help the shelter but weren't sure where you fit in, this could be your opportunity.

Give the Cherokee County Animal Shelter a call at 256-266-1390 and let us know you’re interested in fostering.

You provide the home. We provide the supplies and veterinary care. Together, we give an animal a chance.
