Today, we're recognizing National Feral Cat Day and raising awareness about the important role feral cats play in our communities.

Feral cats are unsocialized to people and typically live outdoors. Through humane programs like Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), communities can help reduce homeless cat populations while improving the health and well-being of feral cat colonies.

You can help by:

🐱 Spaying and neutering your pets
🐱 Providing shelter during harsh weather when appropriate
🐱 Adopting a socialized cat or kitten from a local shelter

'Tis the season for fall cooking and all things squash and pumpkin. You may be wondering if pumpkin is safe for your cats and dogs.

The answer to that is - YES! It is, however, not safe to let them eat your old, rotting Halloween jack-o-lantern.
·
Pumpkin can be good for animal health as it helps cure digestive upset, and helps with diabetes, high fat levels in blood, and helps overweight pets feel fuller. This is all due to its fiber content. It also contains a plethora of other nutrients like Vitamins A, C, and E, calcium, and iron.
·
If you're looking to try adding pumpkin to your pet's diet, canned pumpkin is the way to go. Start by adding one tablespoon to each mean to provide it as a supplement.
·
Just remember, too much fiber in your pet's diet can cause more harm than help - just like in humans! Be sure to check with your Vet before giving pumpkin to your furry friend.

The leaves have changed, and the temperatures are becoming cooler. Autumn is a perfect time of year - it gives us a break from the summer heat and shows up the beauty Mother Nature has to offer before winter sets in. Keep your pets happy and healthy during these autumn months with these helpful tips:

· Rats and mice seek shelter from the cold in the cooler months, which in turn increases the use of poisons. Be cautious of rodenticides and other cold weather poisons like engine coolants and anitfreeze.

· School is back in session and along with that means stocking up on school supplies. Items like glue sticks, pencils and markers aren't highly toxic to pets, but they can present gastrointestinal issues if ingested. Be sure to keep these things out of your pets' reach.

· Spring and fall are "mushroom season". While you're out for your walk with your dog, or while your outdoor kitty is meandering around the yard, keep an eye out for these fall fungi. 99% of mushrooms have little to no toxicity, but there is that 1% that can be extremely poisonous if ingested. If this happens, contact us immediately at 315-668-7387.

Did you know that September 28th is World Rabies Day? It’s an opportunity for us to raise awareness about rabies prevention.

You may be saying to yourself, “My cat is an indoor cat – or my dog is my only pet – does it really need a rabies vaccine??” The answer to that question is, YES.
·
Rabies is not just an animal health issue, it’s a human health concern as well. So, the vaccine is not just to protect your pets, it’s also to protect YOU. Rabies can be transmitted to humans and is almost always fatal. Even an indoor animal can sneak out of the house and encounter a rabid animal in your neighborhood. A rabid bat could also find its way into your home, which would make for an attractive hunting target for your indoor cat. The first route rabies will take to get to you is through your pet.

Your pet’s first rabies vaccination is good for one year. After the first year, they are generally vaccinated every three years. If your pet has yet to receive a rabies vaccination, please give us a call today at (315) 668-7387 to get it scheduled.

All the fall festivities are in full swing...the pumpkin patches are loaded with all of your decorating needs and the apple orchards are ripe for picking. In this installment of "Can They Eat That?", let's talk about whether our favorite fall fruit is good for our pets...Apples! 🍎🍏

You'll be happy to know that you can add certain fruits to your pet's snack routine as long as you stick to those that are safe. Apples happen to be one of them. Keep in mind though that the key to incorporating fruit into your pet's diet is moderation. Even safe fruits can cause intestinal irritation, diarrhea, or bloating.
·
Apples are high in both protein and fiber and are a great source of vitamins A and C. Before feeding apples to your pet, be sure to remove the core - the seeds contain cyanide.
·
