August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month, so let's scratch the surface on what to look out for to keep your pet's skin healthy!

We all get itchy sometimes - even our pets. But if our pets are scratching excessively, they could be trying to tell us something. Things like food and environmental sensitivities, parasites, nutritional needs and bacterial or fungal infections can cause itchiness and could require treatment.
·
If your pet is licking, rubbing, chewing, or scratching more than normal, give them a good once over. Early detection is key here so that raw or infected skin can be prevented.

July 31st is known as National Mutt Day( aka National Mixed Breeds Day) and it's all about celebrating mixed breed dogs.

Did you know approximately 80% of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds? They also tend to be healthier, better behaved and live longer? They are no less loveable than a pure-bred pup. Millions of mixed breed dogs are sitting in shelters waiting for their forever home.

What can you do to help? Donate to your local shelter if you're able, or volunteer to walk a dog. Most importantly, always be sure to spay and neuter your pets.

Planning a summer camping trip with your pet? A little preparation can help keep your furry companion safe, comfortable, and ready for adventure!

✅ Pack plenty of fresh water and a portable bowl

✅ Bring your pet's food, medications, and vaccination records

✅ Use a secure leash and ID tags at all times

✅ Protect against fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes

✅ Never leave pets unattended in a tent, vehicle, or RV during hot weather

✅ Check paws regularly for cuts, burns, or irritation from rough terrain

Remember, not all pets enjoy the outdoors the same way. Watch for signs of heat stress, exhaustion, or anxiety, and make plenty of time for rest and shade.

Most furry friends love a good beach day just as much as their humans do. Here are a few things you should pack when heading out for some sun and sand with your pet:

· Water and bowl
· Pet-safe sunscreen
· Pet swim vest
· Towels
· Paw protection for the hot sand
· Beach umbrella

🍦 It's National Ice Cream Month!! 🍦

Who doesn't love a crisp, cool cone when we're experiencing the sweltering heat and humidity? Even your four-legged friends deserve a cold refreshment during the dog days of summer (in moderation, of course).

Here is a dog-friendly ice cream recipe your furry family members are sure to love!

All you need is:

· 32 ounces plain Greek yogurt
· 1 ripe banana
·1 cup xylitol-free natural peanut butter

Use a fork to mash the banana in a large bowl. Add the yogurt and peanut butter and mix until combined. Transfer to a bread pan and then cover and freeze it for at least 4 hours before serving. Allow the ice cream to sit at room temperature for 2-3 minutes before scooping. Once soft enough to scoop, put some into a bowl and top with fresh bananas or other dog-friendly fruit and let your pup enjoy!

You can also change up this recipe by adding your dogs favorite treats - mash up strawberries, blueberries or raspberries, or top it with crushed dog biscuits or jerky snacks. Pumpkin is also a great treat for dogs and helps aid digestion. Use pure pumpkin puree that doesn't have any artificial sweeteners in place of the peanut butter for a different flavor. Try adding your ice cream mixture to an ice cube tray or silicone molds for a fun twist on bite-sized ice cream treats!

The temperatures are soaring! Before you head out for a walk, remember: if the asphalt is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your pet's paws.

On sunny days, pavement temperatures can become dangerously high, causing painful burns, blisters, and discomfort in just minutes. Your pet may not be able to tell you their paws are hurting until the damage is already done.

✅ Walk during the early morning or evening hours
✅ Choose grassy or shaded routes whenever possible
✅ Test the pavement with the back of your hand for 7 seconds
✅ Bring water and take frequent breaks

Signs of paw burns may include:
🐾 Limping
🐾 Excessive licking of the feet
🐾 Darkened or damaged paw pads
🐾 Reluctance to walk

Protect those precious paws and help your furry family members stay safe all summer long! ❤️

Our pets rely on us to keep their water bowls full, and their bodies hydrated. In the heat of the summer months, dehydration can hit hard and fast. Since our pets' bodies are 80% water, an abruption in consistent water replenishment can limit their mobility and strength. It can even turn fatal in the most severe cases. Some signs you should be on the lookout for are:

· Dry, tacky gums
· Panting
· Thick saliva
· Sunken eyes
· Vomiting

It's World Chocolate Day!

Today is all about celebrating chocolate—but when it comes to our pets, chocolate is definitely off the menu! 🚫🍫

Chocolate contains substances called theobromine and caffeine, which can be toxic to dogs and cats. Even small amounts can cause symptoms such as:

🐾 Vomiting or diarrhea

🐾 Restlessness or hyperactivity

🐾 Increased heart rate

🐾 Tremors or seizures

The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it can be.

If your pet gets into chocolate, contact us or an emergency veterinarian right away. Quick action can make all the difference!
