Parents,
Let your daughters grow up to be horse girls. Let them grow up learning the meaning of hard work. Let them learn what it means to get up early at 5 or 6 am to beat the heat for feeding and cleaning stalls. Let them feel the dust and sawdust stick to their arms and face as they sift through the shavings to make sure they get every last piece of manure. Let them feel that happiness of putting in a fresh bag of shavings in the stall just to watch their horse go and lay down as soon as they get to their stall. Let them learn to be out in the freezing cold to break ice because that horse depends on them to be able to drink. Let them be so cold that they feel like their toes and fingers are falling off but they just have to get through one more stall and one more water. Let them know what it means to stay out in the barn with their horse waiting patiently for them to dry with a cooler on because their horse was still too wet to put away due to sweating from their hard ride and it is now freezing outside. Let them learn what it means to have another life depending on them.
Let your daughters grow into horse show girls. Let them learn what it means to be up before the sun comes up to make sure their horse is fed before the show starts. Let them stress over their horse being dirty and now having to wash them early in the morning because their horse found the one pile of p**p to choose to roll in. Let them know the feeling of having to worry about more than just themselves and learn time management trying to figure out how to get their horse ready and themselves dressed and hair pulled back nice and neat before their class at 8am. Let them feel the letdown of not placing after all those hours of practice sweat and tears. But then let them relish in that feeling of pure joy when they win their first belt buckle.

Let your daughters worry and fret over their favorite horse coming up lame and spending the countless hours in the barn doctoring them to ensure they heal properly. Let them learn the value of life when they lose the partner of a life time. Let them learn the value of the pure love that a horse has to share.
We often take for granted the important life lessons that our horses teach us. We take for granted the love and endless try that our horses give us. I found myself today cleaning stalls and realizing how much I missed having that time in my day to just re-center myself and laugh at my horses. I grew up cleaning anywhere from 4 to 16 stalls and I never thought I would miss it until I didn’t have a barn to clean any more.
