Wild-side Rehab of WKY

Wild-side Rehab of WKY We provide Wildlife Rescue, Rehabilitation,Release and Education for Western Ky and surrounding areas. We are working on obtaining our 501c3 status.

We specialize in Opossums and Squirrels, but accept all wildlife and will network with other rehabbers to get them the help they need. We are a wildlife rehab for Muhlenberg and surrounding counties in Western KY specializing in neonatal wildlife specifically opossums. We are licensed to rescue, treat/rehab and release all mammal/reptile wildlife, however we do not rehab/intake birds but can put y

ou in contact with individuals who can help. We use networking with other rehabbers and animal care specialists to be sure all wildlife get an amazing start to life or an amazing restart to life. Why do we Rescue, rehab, Release and educate because all of God's creatures deserve to live the life God intended them to fulfill and experience. "Every day I have the choice to live a life of compassion that not only saves animals but helps the environment."

🐾 Meet Two of Our Wild Co-Workers: Herbie & Charlie! 🐾

Every day, we get to share our lives with some pretty amazing wildlings — and today we want to introduce you to two very special non-releasable residents.

🥬Veggie & Fruit Wishlist🍓
https://www.walmart.com/lists/wishlist/ff10361b-ba46-4cf5-b133-23c031b10519

🌿 Meet Herbie the Groundhog!
Herbie is approximately 5–6 years old and has two clubbed feet, which makes her non-releasable. She is spoiled, loved, and living her best chunky groundhog life with us!

🥬How much does Herbie eat⁉️
2-3 Lbs of veggies every day
Favorite veggie is corn on the cob

🧡Favorite things🧡
Her barrel Den
Favorite Human-Adam Westerfield
Napping in her tire swing

🐿️ Meet Charlie the Squirrel!
Charlie is non-releasable due to malocclusion of his teeth after a fall from a tree changed the alignment of his jaw. Since his teeth no longer line up properly, they don’t wear down the way they should which can cause eating issues, sores or mouth infections.

🍉Favorite foods🫛
Snap peas
Cucumber
Black berries
Watermelon

🧡Favorite activity🧡
Hanging by his back feet to stretch! We laugh and say he thinks he is a bat 🤣🦇

Fun fact: both Herbie and Charlie are part of the squirrel family!🐾

If you’d like to help keep Herbie & Charlie’s veggie bowls full, we’ve attached their Walmart wishlist along with ways to send veggie funds.

💔STOP RUNNING OVER TURTLES💔

This poor baby was in a turning lane with no turns so no need to use that part of the lane at all! We saw her had to drive about 600 feet to the next driveway turned around came back and this is what we found....WHY?!

What did she do so wrong for you in your vehicle to swerve into a useless section of turning lane to hit her?!?!

HEARTBREAKING FACT she was still very much ALIVE and SUFFERING. She was gasping for air and every flex of her shell made her wince in pain until she just closed her eyes and waited for the pain to stop.

Turtles DO NOT DIE when you hit them even when their bones are broken, organs exposed, aged bodies are crushed beyond repair...they DO NOT DIE they suffer, are eaten alive by other animals, pecked at by birds, sensitive exposed inner tissue bakes in the beating sun....

DO NOT BE AN ASS it is not fun, cool, cute or an environmental duty to SMASH TURTLES!

IT IS PATHETIC AND CRUEL!!

This sweet girl was quickly and effectively humanely euthanized by gunshot to end her suffering because there are no vets in our area with proper turtle sedation methods for euthanasia...even our wonderful wildlife.

This is the HARD TO SEE, HEARTBREAKING, RAW, TRUE SIDE of rehab and as hard as it is for our followers to see we deal with and see this cruelty and heartbreak daily!

‼️LONG READ BUT NEEDS TO BE SAID, READ, AND SHARED‼️

🚨 WILDLIFE EDUCATION MATTERS 🚨

More wildlife suffer and die at the hands of the public than from natural causes.

Not because people are always cruel, but because too many well-meaning people intervene when intervention isn't needed, wait too long to seek help, or never seek help at all. Others see wildlife as something to possess, keep, show off, or treat as a novelty instead of appreciating them for what they are—wild animals that belong in the wild.

Licensed wildlife rehabilitators receive animals every day that are deteriorating faster than we can save them. They've been fed the wrong foods. They've been exposed to people and pets. They've been handled unnecessarily. By the time help is sought, it is often too late.

None of this has to happen.

If you see wildlife that appears injured, orphaned, or in distress:

📸 Take a photo.
🎥 Take a video.
📞 Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
⏳ Give us time to assess the situation.

The fawn pictured below is a heartbreaking example.

This baby was taken from its mother's side at a local business. The person who took it kept it in their home for three days. Because the fawn could not walk well on hardwood floors, it spent those days confined to a chair. It was not provided proper food, proper care, or access to a wildlife rehabilitator. Instead, the situation was treated as something amusing and shared with others.

Thankfully, concerned individuals convinced the person to surrender the fawn and immediately sought help.

Unfortunately, there are very few deer rehabilitators in our area. We do not rehabilitate deer. We do not have the facilities, space, or specialized training required to raise and release a deer successfully. The limited knowledge we were able to use overnight came from a wonderful retired mentor of ours who graciously continues to answer our calls when emergencies arise.

Because there is no appropriate placement available, this baby will be transferred to a Game Warden today.

This never had to happen.

This baby should not be in a playpen waiting for transport.

This baby should not be crying for its mother.

Its mother should not be searching frantically for her missing fawn.

This situation was entirely preventable.

Wildlife are not pets.
Wildlife are not collectibles.
Wildlife are not entertainment.

They are living beings with families, instincts, and a place in nature.

Please choose education over ignorance.
Choose compassion over possession.
Choose what is best for the animal, not what feels exciting in the moment.

When in doubt, call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator before intervening.

Let's work together to keep wildlife wild. ❤️🦌

Huge thank you to Renee Owens for helping these babies get to us!!

‼️EMERGENCY TRANSPORT NEEDED‼️
🚗PADUCAH TO MUHLENBERG COUNTY🚗

These sweet babies are needing transport from somewhere in paducah(we have not been provided the location or finders phone number to reach out at this time) to Muhlenberg County!

Time is CRITICAL for babies this small they were posted 2 hrs ago in a community group chat and it is unknown when they were found. Each hour that passes is another hour less they have on this earth and lowers their chances of being saved.

If you can help with transport please text 812-319-3912 and as soon as we have all the info we will pass it along!

Thank you for loving the wildlings 🧡🐾

It's always something when the WESTERFIELD CIRCUS hits the road 🤣💯🤡😆

When adam went to put the turtle down he popped his head back to grab adam and flipped himself over, but adam helped him get right side up again.

Ted the turtle went on his/her cantankerous way and we continued our scenic road trip! 🧡🐾

🐢Snapping Turtle-Benton Area🐢

We just picked this beauty up in Benton Area

⁉️Did you know a common snapper has less bite force than a human⁉️

This pretty baby was hit by a car but luckily was rescued and kept safe until we could get there to help.

They have extensive shell fractures and some trauma to their tail but with some eyelets secured with Turtle safe glue and wire that we tighten daily and weekly the shell should mend and back to the merky waters this baby will go far away from traffic and busy roadways.

‼️STAY TUNED FOR REPAIR VIDEO‼️

We understand accidents happen and animals vs cars can't always be avoided but we also know more often than not these prehistoric dino-turtles and snakes are hit on purpose due to fear, ignorance and prejudices passed down through the generations.

Starting this weekend we will be taking our weekends for family time, household stuff, and catching up on much needed rest and recharging!

We love working with all the wildlings but we desperately need to start taking time for us as humans so we can recharge and continue busting our butts for the wildlings!
