Barn hunt on the weekend with an old friend guiding us. Gracie has a great drive for this endeavor and I love watching her problem solve. My girls got to help hide the rat 🐀 and decoy as well. So much fun!!!

Moose is a very excited young pup that used to pull and be 💯 forward focused. He has learned to check in with his handler for instructions and follow politely with a loose leash. Today he is practicing the “stop” cue and picked it up quickly. Such a smart pup and walks are much more enjoyable without him pulling nonstop

Rubi, a high drive German Shorthair Pointer, learning to walk with a loose leash. This shows progress, not perfection, as she is a young pup and this is our first walk around the block. Rubi is learning that when the leash is loose she gets rewarded. When she checks in or returns to her handler, she is rewarded. When her handler says, “this way” and changes direction, she too changes direction and is rewarded. There are many ways we can capture and reward our dogs! 🐕 See Mark and Reward ;)

Dogs pull because they have a very fast pace compared to humans. Dogs on a 6ft leash have to slow down to match our pace. They have to be taught to walk with a loose leash. This is why the traditional walk is NOT the best exercise for your dog. I’m a huge proponent of walking at a fast pace, using a long line 15ft+ and allowing my dog off leash time so the can move their bodies freely. If you’d like help with any of these steps, reach out.

This winter 🥶 season when long walks can be a challenge, tryout hide and seek with your pup 🐶 for enrichment. It’s so much fun!

Teaching your dog to approach strangers confidently and politely is no easy task for many dogs. By rewarding Moose for having all four paws on the ground, his guardian is teaching him how to greet others. Well done!

No shock collar needed for this snappy recall.

Daily enrichment for you pup is super important. If we don’t give them something to do they find something, often what we consider “trouble”. Exercise your dog’s mind daily if you can. I sprinkled kibble in this box that has paper packaging and then loosely closed it up.

Is your reactive dog wearing you thin? It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, tired and weary. Don’t forget to take care of yourself. Self care is the remedy for overwhelm. Progress is not linear. It takes time and setbacks happen. Be patient and kind with yourself on your dog’s reactivity journey.

In a world where we humans are busy, busy and distracted by screens, I would say most of our dog companions crave more QUALITY TIME with their guardians. Each dog 🐕 will have different preferences when it comes to time spent with you, but try time together on a sniffari (walking with dog and letting them sniff their hearts out). Playing tug or fetch with your dog and throw in a wait, sit, down or spin before tossing, trick training, snuggling (if your dog likes it- practice consent checks), hand feed your dog dinner, groom your pet with gentle brushing, massage, etc. Think about what your dog loves and give them that gift. 🎁
