South Dakota has officially approved unlimited resident elk tags for the eastern half of the state east of the Missouri River.

The rule passed in a 4 to 2 vote on May 5 and is aimed at preventing elk from establishing permanent herds in heavily farmed agricultural areas. State wildlife officials say eastern South Dakota is not suitable for large elk populations because of crop damage concerns and conflicts with private landowners.

Under the new policy, resident hunters will be able to purchase tags to harvest elk that move into the region. The Crow Creek Sioux Reservation area will reportedly remain excluded from the hunting zone.

At the same time, South Dakota is also increasing elk tags in Custer State Park after wildlife surveys showed the herd has grown well above management objectives. Biologists counted nearly 800 elk in the park despite a target population of roughly 500 to 600 animals.

State officials say the increased harvest is intended to reduce habitat pressure, manage disease concerns, and keep elk numbers in balance with other wildlife populations.
