I called my grandma to talk about ramps this week…

So Ris and I (Jaz) have been learning a lot about these fleeting little forest onions, and recently learned of their deep roots in Appalachia—where my family is from. The second I mentioned them to my grandma Bev this week, she lit up ✨

She told me about neighbors looking forward to cooking with them this time of year, the annual Ramp Festival in West Virginia, and how she used to stand at the edge of the woods (she’s not a nature girlie 🥾) while her dad harvested them every spring.

Funny enough, Grandma Bev doesn’t actually remember eating them herself—which might explain why I never heard much about ramps growing up. Now, they’ve become a spring staple for us, something we look forward to sharing with neighbors, friends, and CSA members ❤️

It was a neat side quest this week stepping away from the fields and getting a little adventurous—foraging ramps in our backwoods for this week’s Spring CSA 🌱

If you’re around the peninsula this weekend, check out the 1st Annual Ram Festival with (🎉 congrats on passing inspections this week). And special shoutouts to for putting us on to RAMP BUTTER and Tom for encouraging us to explore our woods for ramps.

Yes, it is spring 🌧️🥬❄️🪏🌤️
A take-your-time, maybe-we’ll-sneak-a-warm-day… then snow, warm up, and frost kind of spring. A slow and steady spring, reminding us we truly live in a four-seasons region.

So friends as you can imagine… this is one of the tougher times of year on the farm—not just because of frost risk and yo-yo weather (which can stop us in our tracks) but because so much of our season depends on what happens right NOW.

We’ve been at it since January—which is why we’re currently bursting at the seams with baby plants (tomatoes, kale, cabbage, peppers, eggplant…) itching to get into the ground. And as your farmers, we’re glued to the forecast, trying to time their planting just right—minimizing risk and giving these plants their very best shot to grow and make it to YOU!

AND we can’t talk about spring without our CSA Crew! This early-season work of tending to baby plants, moving compost, and sowing seeds is possible because of their support—our All-Season and Spring members are already enjoying those first greens of the year (along with veggies from our farmer friends + ).

Across our region, farmers just like us are in the fields and on the ground. While we’re a little less visible this time of year, we’re certainly thinking of you and we hope you’re thinking of us too💗

We’re your neighbors 𝗔𝗡𝗗 we’d love to be your farmers, too 👩🏾‍🌾👨‍🌾

Our CSA (aka 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆) is the most direct way we get fresh veggies from our farm to 𝗬𝗢𝗨 — our friends and neighbors in 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗼 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗶𝘁 and 𝗟𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘂 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 (Traverse City area).

A CSA lets us — 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗙𝗔𝗥𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗦 — plant with purpose. We can grow knowing exactly who we’re growing for (𝗬𝗢𝗨!), instead of crossing our fingers, hoping our veggies find homes at harvest time. 𝙃𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚!

Food is as separate from immigration as soil is from growing it.

Not everyone is ready for that conversation—but we need to be.

It’s a conversation that’s regularly on our minds, but especially lately.

Immigration has always shaped how food is grown in this country:from before present-day bordersto the exploitative systems that followed them.

Our modern food system distances food from the hands that grow it,even though over 70% of U.S. farmworkers are immigrants.

These aren’t abstract numbers. They’re our neighbors. Our community. Our favorite market vendors.

Through farming, we’ve learned a lot aboutthe many people and partners that contribute theirlabor, knowledge, and carefor food to show up so reliablyin EVERY season, EVERY DAY.

Immigration in the U.S. extends far beyond farming, this just happens to be one lens we see through.

Yet we ALL rely on farms + farm workers.
Which makes it a lens worth seeing through
and a conversation we can’t stay silent on.

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? WINTER is when we (your farmers) shape the season.

Today it looked like Ris on the phone with a (walk-behind tractor) dealer, talking through lead times. We’re investing in equipment to improve bed prep efficiencies — a huge bottleneck we felt hard this past season.

It looked like Jaz posted up at a laptop, working through back-end website updates to improve user experience because YOU, our incredible growing community are interested in more and more local veggies and flowers each year. (Seriously, thank you!))

And now that Ris has mostly dialed in the crop plan (with some loving feedback from Jaz), we’re lining up seed orders and compost deliveries so we’re ready to get into the soil as soon as our co-manager allows (co-manager = Mother Nature).

This is just a small glimpse of the work happening right now — long before the first harvest of the year. And much of it is made possible because of community — Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).

Early commitment from our CSA members helps us tackle the pre-season, a show of mutual support that carries the season forward 💚💚

Hey 2026… 𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙤𝙠𝙖𝙮 𝙞𝙛 𝙬𝙚’𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙬𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 2025?

Ten non-stop months, our biggest growing season to date, and largest CSA ever — now slowly catching our breath and finally sipping (NOT chugging) coffee.

The pace has slowed, but work and planning are humming… 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀 👀 (yup, even as we keep digging ourselves out of the snow)

As we continue reflecting on 2025, we want to share our appreciation with everyone who supports local food and this first-gen farm — 𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗦𝗔 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘄!

Cheers to y’all for an incredible season and all the inspiration for the one to come! 💗✨

Your farmers,
Jaz + Ris

Welp. About last night… guess lettuce is done for the season 🦌🥬

Sometimes it’s insects. Sometimes it’s weather. And sometimes… it’s the damn deer.

A small fence failure turned into a big deer dinner — two 100’ beds of fall lettuce, gone overnight. Jaz fenced in this half acre with a two-layer electric fence earlier this season, which kept us protected up until last night.

We don’t cry over losses like we used to, but dang, it still stings. Farming sure has a way of keeping you humble — and always moving forward.
