We are getting a lot of calls asking for winter critter care advice. Here goes:
1. Hay- good quality forage is essential for all farm animals. Most can have access to hay around the clock. Hay should be dry and mold-free. Animals will get warm from the inside as they digest forage.
2. Grain/pellets- only if they are accustomed to it. Now is not the time to go switching up diets and pouring sugars into their bellies.
3. Fats- most critters can tolerate adding a source of fat, such as CocaSoya oil, black oil sunflowers, or flax seed to add cool calories.
4. Salt/minerals- be sure critters have access to salt blocks or free choice minerals. This will keep them drinking.
5. Water- heated buckets are worth the expense. Clean and refill daily. If youβre concerned your critter isnβt drinking, offer a bucket of warm water.
6. Shelter- all critters need a solid wind break and overhang to keep snow and rain off. Warm straw or other bedding can be nice to nestle down in.
7. Blankets- the majority of critters will grow adequate coats and be plenty warm. Look carefully at your old or underweight animals. Certain breeds are thinner haired as well. Check multiple times a day for shivering. If critters are blanketed, remove it and groom them in a regular basis. Let them roll out in the snow and scratch. Blanket measuring guidelines are available online. Once you commit to a blanket, their hair growth will slow down.
8. Dental care and deworming: keep your critters on a schedule and be on the lookout for any issues.
