Checkers

7 year old 15 hand grade paint gelding

If you’re looking for the perfect trail partner this is your guy! Put your reins down and enjoy the ride type of guy!

Checkers is a very seasoned trail horse who enjoys holding up the back, but also happy to be where ever he is put in the group. He will go through water, cross over logs and bridges. Recently took him on a 5 mile trail ride off property and he acted like he never missed a beat.

He has recently been put back to work after Sitting for some time and is tuning up his arena skills. Rides around perfectly in just a loping hack. He does require a quick lunge before you ride to get a few crow hops out. Has never offered to buck with a rider though. Very calm cool and collected type of guy and has a sweet demeanor. I think with a little more of a tune up he could be a great kids horse as well. He’s got the right mind for it.

Tupac

14 year old 15.1 hand grade bay roan gelding

Tupac is one of the sweetest natured horses, on the ground he is calm and confident with great manners loads great, ties great, good for farrier and loves bath time.

Under saddle he requires a confident rider. He starts out a little forward but always works down into a nice ride.

He walk, trot, canters with a great stop. He’s got a great start in a neck rein and understands hip and shoulder control. He would excel well in a job that keeps him thinking. We could see him being a barrel horse or some sort of rodeo horse. He’s been exposed to cattle and has done some ranch work. A experienced teen could handle him. He’s good on the trails but does get a little watchy at things he’s unsure of. So a confident rider is key.

When I was a go getter teen, this was the type of horse I wish I could have had. He’s very sweet and cuddly as well, loves his people.

C**t starting is hands down my favorite thing to do.

Let’s talk about my 90 day C**t starting program.

We strive to make a well rounded CONFIDENT horse that enjoys their job and the learning experience.

The first 30:
It’s all about creating the confident mind. We want forward motion, steering, stopping, riding the rail and steering off the rail, understanding what the leg means and not being nervous or scared of it. We also start introducing hip and shoulder control .The first 30 days should not be packed full of things the horse isn’t ready to comprehend. Pushing too fast and asking for too much can damage the process and create anxiety.

30-60: Body control and collection. This is where they really start learning to yield those shoulders and hip as well as learning and understanding the neck rein and giving to the bridle. We work on lots of transitions during this timeframe as well.

60-90: The finishing touches. This is where we start holding them accountable with transitions, lead departures, keeping their body straight, moving the hip and shoulders fluidly, we introduce log drags, bridges, tarps, and ropes and trail riding.

Confidence is key, every horse learns at its own pace. Some need longer than 90 days and that’s okay. And some are just natural and talented and pick up things faster, that doesn’t mean that don’t need just as much practice. It’s easy to get overly zealous and it’s important to remember not to skip steps because they are naturally talented.
