Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids

Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids Established in 2008, Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids is a 501c3 Non-Profit, Animal Medical Organization Ellie’s plight became our inspiration.

Our Story

This is the story of how Critter Crusaders was founded. In Feb 2008, a two year old Siberian Husky named Ellie, was surrendered to the Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter by her owner. Going blind from cataracts, the shelter was unable to afford the medical procedure that would restore her sight and make her adoptable. As shelter volunteers, we interacted with Ellie and could see the bleak real

ity of her future. She was one of countless other shelter animals in need of medical attention. Things became crystal clear to us. Homeless animals deserved access to medical care as a means to increase their adoptability and make them healthy. Our goal was set for Ellie. Raise the money and restore her sight. With the financial help of many generous people across Eastern Iowa, that goal was a success! Ellie received sight saving surgery in Ames. After recuperating, she was adopted in May 2008 by a family from Omaha, NE. On Friday, June 6th, 2008, Ellie and her family returned to Cedar Rapids to make an appearance at Grant Wood School to an all school assembly. They were there to say “Thank You” to the students who had helped raise funds for Ellie’s surgery. One week later, on Friday, June 13th, the Cedar River crested in a catastrophic event that changed lives forever. Cedar Rapids and surrounding communities experienced an epic flood, which wiped out the Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter and displaced hundreds of pets from their homes. That disaster strengthened our conviction to help our local homeless animals. In February 2009, Triton, a 6-week-old puppy with a badly broken front leg, limped into the Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter. With the help of many doctors and a great foster family, we were able to facilitate a complex surgery that included growing new bone while in an external fixator device. From start to finish this was a 4 month commitment of time and resources, and once again the public responded to our request for financial help. Our non-profit was first formed in the name of Friends of Cedar Rapids Animal Shelter. On March 19, 2009, we became an official 501c3. Later our name was officially changed to Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids on April 21, 2011. Our role has greatly expanded over the years to include partnerships with local rescues and shelters in Eastern Iowa. We are committed to assisting homeless, abused and neglected animals with advanced medical care that saves lives, mends broken bodies and restores health, happiness and adoptability. A true second chance at life. The commitment to form Critter Crusaders came from Ellie. The vision we had for her then, is the mission we continue today. One dog and one horrible time in Iowa’s history inspired us to succeed on behalf of all local homeless animals. We exist to provide the care they desperately need and deserve. This is our passion!

⚠️ Donations Needed⚠️

Tiny baby Asher is once again hospitalized at Blue Pearl Cedar Rapids. Asher's foster mom Taylor called us yesterday afternoon when she noticed the kitten becoming lethargic and not eating. With these tiny babies when symptoms arise, bad things are happening. Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids called Blue Pearl and immediately sent Asher right into the emergency service.

He was very hypothermic and this occurred because of the large amount of tissue and skin he is missing on his back from a traumatic avulsion. The skin helps regulate temperature, hydration levels in the body and protects against external pathogens.

As wounds such as his begin to heal, they morph and change. Generally it is not immediately known the intervention that is needed due to the bodies sloughing and healing ability. Dr Hundley, a critical care specialist, felt that it was time to do some minor debridement on the wound without removing too much extra tissue. She then applied a tie over bandage that covers the area and promotes healing generally with a honey like substance that is used to pull out infection and dead tissue.

Asher also has been diagnosed with coccidia which is a protozoa in the intestinal tract. He is now on medication for that as well as IV fluids, antibiotics and pain control. When we took this case from our good friends at Tails in Transit, we knew it would be a long haul with this adorable little gremlin. He is so worth it.

This has been Asher's second Critical Care hospitalization since taking him into our medical system this past Monday. We thank everyone who previously donated to his care and ask that if you are so fortunate to assist us once again, we would be very appreciative.

Once his little body was regulated on temperature and hydration, he started to eat as you can see in these adorable photos. This is a voracious kitten with a very intact will to survive at all of about 6 to 7 weeks of age. More to come on Asher's healing journey. ❤️🐾

A very wet and stormy trip to UW Madison Veterinary Teaching Hospital yesterday yielded great results for Louise! ❤️

Our senior girl from A Purposeful Life Animal Rescue & Sanctuary had her three month post surgery recheck for removal of a pulmonary carcinoma in her lung. She remains all clear on mestastisis and we are thrilled!

Lou has been in our Critter Crusader medical system for the past 17 months after her first initial surgery to remove a cutaneous melanoma on her leg. She has sailed through everything!

Lou is living proof that at 16 years old, age is not a disease! We deliver advanced diagnostics, treatments and surgery based on a pets needs and overall health, not age.

Good girl sweetie Lou! She is pictured here with UW Oncologist Dr. Yant. 🐾

Look who is out of the hospital! 6 week old kitten Asher was released from Blue Pearl Cedar Rapids today after 2 days of hospitalization for a massive avulsion injury.
Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids will have our work cut out for us healing this boy while attempting to avoid complications. He is so tiny but such a large presence and personality!

Asher, from Tails in Transit Rescue, will return to Blue Pearl on Friday and again on Sunday for monitoring this large open wound. This will take many weeks of frequent rechecks.

Depending on how this wound matures, he might have to undergo sedated tie over bandage changes but time will tell that story. For tonight he is in his foster home with Taylor and eating like a little munch monster!

Again we thank everyone for their donations towards his initial emergency care and hospitalization. We're so appreciative. There are so many more chapters to be written in Asher's story. We will keep everyone updated! ❤️🐾

Asher Update❤️🐾
Tiny baby Asher is doing great during his hospitalization at BluePearl Pet Hospital Cedar Rapids. This little man came into Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control yesterday with a huge gaping avulsion-type wound on his back, extending from his shoulders to his hips.

The wound was infested with maggots and prior to his admission at the Cedar Rapids Shelter, a rescuer painstakingly pulled an enormous amount of maggots off of this baby. Tails in Transit Rescue “pulled” little Asher from the shelter and Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids stepped up to manage and pay for this kid’s expensive life saving care.

Asher remains hospitalized tonight and is doing great! He is on IV fluids, good pain control and antibiotics to prevent the onset of infection. In a case like this, the maggots were actually Asher’s best friends. With such a large wound, these little guys consumed the infected, dead tissue, preventing infection and sepsis. We would like to give this decomposition process some credit in certain instances. Though very creepy, it is likely that Asher owes his life to the fly larvae and Taylor who found him in such a horrid condition.

We are happy to report that he is FELV/FIV a negative, is eating everything the vet techs are offering and very active in his kennel! This tiny tyke feels so much better! We say it everyday.….the absolute miracle of veterinary medicine!

We thank you all for your wonderful donations to help us defray the cost of this expensive medical case! You have come to this kitten’s rescue and we are so grateful! More to come on Asher’s amazing journey to health and recovery.❤️🐾

Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids has a life changing surgery tomorrow for beautiful Chance, a young boxer from our friends at Mid Iowa Boxer Rescue. Chance has juvenile cataracts and he has been going blind for several months. Originally this boy came into Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control.

We thank the good folks at Mid Iowa Boxer Rescue for “pulling” Chance into their organization. The Cedar Rapids shelter routinely works with rescues throughout eastern Iowa as many pets that come in require medical care and home environments that are not normally available at a busy open admission city shelter.

When we saw Chance at the shelter, we knew that we needed to help him. Tomorrow this boy will go into surgery with Dr. Grozdanic and Animal Eye Consultants of Iowa. How lucky we are in this area to have a veterinary ophthalmologist!

Chance will have the cataracts removed in both eyes tomorrow morning. This is approx. a $5400 surgery, but the result for this one dog will be absolutely priceless. This is your donations in action. Changing lives, one pet at a time. More to come on Chance’s journey to a vibrant future.❤️🐾

‼️Graphic Photo Warning‼️

Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids received a call for help this afternoon regarding a kitten with a large wound on his back that was infested with maggots. The initial messages came from CC friends Britney Kunkle and Taylor Ewing. This kitten was found by Taylor very early this morning and our friends at Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control accepted the kitten at the shelter.

Prior to admission as seen in the photo, Britney removed tons of maggots and fly strike in a painstaking effort that proved very successful. Tails in Transit Rescue offered to pull the kitten from the shelter and Critter Crusaders committed to the medical case.

Tonight 8 week old baby Asher is hospitalized at BluePearl Pet Hospital Cedar Rapids. He is on IV fluid, good pain control and antibiotics to prevent sepsis. This is a very large open wound with muscle exposed. That places this tiny baby at risk of infection and a multitude of other issues. The estimate for a short term hospital stay is between $3000-$5000. We sure could use assistance with this cost if you are so fortunate to help.

This will be a long term case. This wound will need to heal by second intention, with Ashers own body doing the majority of the work. At this time there will be no surgical intervention unless infection sets in. We will keep everyone updated on our tiny patient and this developing medical journey. We thank you.❤️🐾

Hibachi has been in our Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids medical system since March 6th when he was found unresponsive in Shellsburg after being hit by car. “Bachi” as he is affectionately known, is the feline counterpart to Honey, our traumatic brain injury girl who you have read so much about on our page. It was hard to believe that we had yet another animal suffering from a brain injury with multiple fractures, where he remained recumbent and unresponsive for a lengthy period of time.

These cases are extremely expensive, and we resisted euthanizing this boy though medical advice pointed us in that direction. We have to give these animals a fighting chance. After multiple days of hospitalization, and several thousands of dollars, for different surgeries, the last one just a few days ago to remove a stabilizing pin in his mandible fracture, we can honestly say that our choice for Bachi, was the right choice. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy.

Today, after many weeks of care with feeding tubes, medications surgeries, multiple vet visits and the amazing in-home care and rehabilitation by Trish Ringgold from S.A.I.N.T. Rescue (Saving Animals in Need Today), Bachi boy is now the kitty we always knew that he could be! Life is so precious and fleeting. To give these animals who would normally be quickly euthanized, life and a return to full function, is our biggest reward. We thank all of you who donate to our worthy cause. ❤️🐾

Batman underwent eye enucleation surgery and a neuter through Critter Crusaders this past Wednesday at Highland Park Animal Hospital in Des Moines. This kitty was part of a community cat program and dedicated caretakers Marcy and Liz were horrified when they saw his dramatic eye injury and started of process of finding help!

So many good people came together for this boy including Iowa STARS for Animals and Paws of Hope Animal Rescue, Batman was trapped and is now happily recovering from his surgery with foster dad Colby Goetsch through Paws of Hope. Critter Crusaders will keep Batman in our medical system until he is fully healed and sutures are out. He is what we would call semi feral. So many feral cats have actually lived in a home at some point in their life. They are absolutely deserving of our help.

We love these pics because Batman Is accepting human affection from Colby and enjoying it…along with what we call kitty crack…Churu’s! More to come on Batman’s journey back to health and happiness!❤️🐾
