There’s something beautiful about the sunlight streaming through this moment, but the real beauty is in what’s happening between horse and human.

We’re working on the art of holding space for the horse.

Giving them time to settle into the work, understand what we’re asking, and mentally process each step rather than rushing from one request to the next.

True horsemanship isn’t about how quickly we can get a response. It’s about creating an environment where the horse feels comfortable enough to think, learn, and offer that response with understanding.

The pause isn’t wasted time. It’s where learning happens.

“Wow, this is like those girls’ soccer!” ⚽🐴

That was a comment made by another student watching these two young ladies ride, and I couldn’t think of a better compliment.

These girls have been riding with me for years, and what you’re seeing is the result of dedication, consistency, and a commitment to learning correct biomechanical riding.

They’ve spent years developing independent seats, balanced positions, body awareness, and an understanding of how their own biomechanics influence the horse beneath them. Learning to ride correctly isn’t about simply staying in the saddle. It’s about developing the ability to communicate with the horse through balance, feel, timing, and correct use of the body.

Just like any other sport, becoming a skilled equestrian requires practice, discipline, patience, and a willingness to continually improve.

Horseback riding IS a sport. Horsemanship is a lifelong education. And correct riding is a skill that is developed, not something that happens overnight.

I’m incredibly proud of the horsewomen these two are becoming. Not just because of how they ride, but because of the dedication they’ve shown to learning the why behind everything we do.

At Smokin Rose Ranch, we’re not just teaching people to ride horses. We’re developing educated, thoughtful, capable equestrians.

And these two are a wonderful example of what happens when students take their horsemanship seriously. ❤️

Western, English, dressage, reining, jumping, or just hitting the trails—it doesn’t matter what discipline you ride. 🐎

Good horsemanship is good horsemanship.

Your horse should be ridden from the hind end forward, engaging their hindquarters, lifting through their back, and moving with balance and purpose.

It’s not about where their head is. It’s about how their entire body is working.

The power comes from behind. The front end is just along for the ride!
