🔥 DTF vs DTG vs Vinyl vs Sublimation — What’s the Difference? 🔥

We get asked ALL the time:
“What printing method is best?”

Truthfully? It depends on the project. 👏
But for MOST apparel printing, DTF gives the best overall combination of quality, durability, comfort, versatility, and vibrant color.

Here’s the breakdown ⬇️

🔥 DTF (Direct to Film)
This is what we specialize in at Black Sheep Custom Design.

✅ Full color prints
✅ Bright vibrant designs
✅ Works on cotton, poly & blends
✅ Soft feel when done correctly
✅ Great durability
✅ Amazing detail & gradients
✅ Perfect for small OR bulk orders
✅ No weeding vinyl

DTF is NOT vinyl.
It’s a printed transfer that bonds into the garment using heat and adhesive powder technology.

That means:
✔ softer feel
✔ more flexibility
✔ better detail
✔ lighter wearability
✔ unlimited colors

🔥 DTG (Direct to Garment)
DTG prints directly into the shirt like an inkjet printer.

Pros:
✔ Soft feel
✔ Good for cotton shirts
✔ Nice for simple art

Cons:
❌ Usually best on cotton only
❌ Pretreatment required
❌ Slower production
❌ Can struggle with vibrant colors on some garments

🔥 VINYL (HTV)
Vinyl is cut from sheets of material and heat pressed onto apparel.

Pros:
✔ Great for names & numbers
✔ Specialty finishes available

Cons:
❌ Can feel thick/heavy
❌ Layering colors gets bulky
❌ Limited detail
❌ Large designs can feel stiff

🔥 SUBLIMATION
Sublimation is AWESOME… for the RIGHT products.

The ink actually dyes INTO the material instead of sitting on top.

Pros:
✔ SUPER soft feel
✔ Permanent print
✔ No cracking or peeling
✔ Amazing for performance wear & drinkware

BUT…

Cons:
❌ Works BEST on polyester
❌ Usually requires light-colored garments
❌ Doesn’t work well on cotton
❌ White ink cannot be printed

That’s why you mostly see sublimation on:
✔ jerseys
✔ tumblers
✔ mugs
✔ polyester tees
✔ athletic wear

At the end of the day, every print method has a purpose. We choose the method that gives our customers the BEST finished product possible. 💯
