💜 Elena Update 💜

They say donkeys are one of the most stoic mammals in the animal kingdom, and boy is it true. Our girl is bearing more weight each day, but is it because of the cloud boot? The pain management increase? Or sheer willpower to outlive us all?

Attached are her X-rays. Keep in mind, this is just her front right hoof. Her other three legs are just as twisted and confusing. Our farrier Amy will be examining her again tomorrow because that last photo… 💔💔

Our farrier Amy came out to examine Elena for a suspected abscess, but just couldn’t find one. She’s instructed Elena’s fosters on how to keep searching for one and did a wheat bran poultice and bandaging to draw out any hidden abscesses too.

After more conversation about our sweet girl who is fully unable to stand on this leg, even with the cloud boot, we are prepared for another 2 maybe 3 weeks of stall rest to see how she does. If it is a soft tissue injury, we should start to see some kind of improvement in that time. If it is an abscess, it should be found by then. Either way we will have some answers.

If there is zero improvement in that time frame, we’ll begin evaluating her quality of life as a whole. We are not here to keep animals in boxes so that kind of life is not an option for this donkey. We thank everyone for the continued love and positive energies sent Elena’s way!!

A little ray of hope this morning for our girl Elena.

Radiologist doesn’t see any fractures, so next step is to remove her shoes and look for an abscess. Unfortunately those aren’t always present in X-rays. It could also be a soft tissue injury, but with the lack of swelling I’m remaining hopeful that it’s *just* an abscess.

Elena needs our help. 💔

I’ve never seen a donkey fight for a better life the way this 12yo jenny has. We’ve only known her since February, but you wouldn’t recognize her today if you hadn’t seen her since then. We’ve gotten weight on her, her coat is shiny and healthy, she loves her herd and afternoon mash time. It’s slow but her trust for us humans inches closer and closer every day.

Her feet and conformation have always been our biggest challenge. Major deformities in all four limbs, history of laminitis and foundering, custom 3D shoes glued on every 4-6 weeks. She’s come. So. Far.

Sunday night she came up lame in her front right, but by Monday morning she was completely non-weight bearing and she only went downhill from there. The vet was called out and we did X-rays and full flexion exam yesterday. We’ve just been trying to process the information before we could share it with all of you.

Essentially, she has sprained her pastern joint. A rare but possible injury, especially from an equine with the existing issues she has. But the X-rays showed even worse news than that. Floating bone fragments and a rotten, almost completely gone coffin bone. I’ll post the images once I receive them.

So what do we do for our girl? Quality of life is all we are concerned with here at CAWS. Assuming she recovers from the sprain quickly (if at all) what do we do next? Stronger pain management? Less freedom to roam with her beloved herd? Where do we draw the line for this precious life to keep fighting, or to end a level of suffering that we couldn’t have predicted.
