Dog heat stroke symptoms. Medical infographic. Landscape veterinarian poster.
Heatstroke in dogs is a life-threatening medical emergency that requires immediate recognition and rapid, controlled cooling to prevent severe organ damage or death. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
# # 🚨 Critical Warning Signs
Dogs cannot sweat like humans and rely primarily on panting to cool down. Watch for these progressive symptoms: [6, 7, 8, 9]

* Heavy, frantic panting or loud, labored breathing
* Excessive drooling with thick, sticky saliva
* Bright red, dark, or purple gums and tongue
* Lethargy, weakness, or collapsing
* Dizziness, disorientation, or stumbling
* Vomiting or diarrhea [10, 11, 12, 13, 14]

# # 🌡️ Immediate Treatment Strategies
If you suspect your dog is overheating, take action immediately before driving to the vet. Your goal is to lower their body temperature gradually. [15, 16]

* Move to shade: Get the dog into an air-conditioned room or a shaded, breezy area immediately.
* Apply cool water: Pour cool (not ice-cold) water over their body, focusing on the abdomen, chest, and paw pads.
* Use a fan: Place the wet dog in front of a fan or AC vent to speed up evaporative cooling.
* Offer water: Provide fresh, cool water, but do not force them to drink.
* Avoid ice: Never use ice cubes or freezing water. This causes blood vessels to constrict, trapping heat deeper inside the body.
* Go to the vet: Even if the dog seems to recover, take them to an emergency veterinarian immediately to check for internal organ damage. [17, 18, 19, 20, 21]

If you are dealing with an active emergency right now, please let me know your dog's breed, approximate age, and current symptoms so I can provide more specific guidance while you contact a local vet.
