Drop It!…Simon is a 14 week old mini Goldendoodle puppy, who’s learning quickly! One of the best behaviors to teach young puppies is Drop It, because they like to put things (everything!) in their mouths…but, this is how they learn about things, about the world, with their mouths.
How to teach Drop It:
Pick a toy your pup loves to play with! Get some good treats.
1. Invited your pup to play by moving the toy around on the floor and say, “Take”.
2. When he grabs it with his mouth, keep playing for a few seconds, as long as he doesn’t start jumping or nipping you.
3. Ready? Get a treat, place it on his nose and say, “Drop”. Putting it on his nose will help him scent the yummy treat and cause him to release the toy. You can say, “Yes!” And.. Give him the treat!
4. Practice and play! This might only last a minute or two. That’s OK!
‼️ If your pup bites or nips your skin, say, “OOPS!” Or “TOO BAD!” And the fun is over, momentarily. If you have the toy in hand, place it out of reach. Wait 30 seconds to a minute. Try again.
Keeping rules in your play will keep them from getting too excited. Have fun!🤩

Joy is the BEST!

07/20/2026

Joy was a good girl at the vet today, getting vaccinated is never fun. But the good people at Fox Valley Animal Hospital always take care of my baby. She is always good for them and pretty resilient. Good girl, Joy! ❤️

Me and my girl, Joy!🤩

07/18/2026

When I only have 20 minutes to exercise my dog, Joy…I take her to a nearby open space, like Hoffman Park in Cary. I pet her sniff and be on a 35’ long line. She gets her freedom, but checks in lots and usually ends up right at my side. Btw, using Wondercide spot on treatment plus a spray product, and no ticks after a check! Good girl, Joy! ⭐️

My girl Joy came with her name, from the rescue. You’ll see why we kept it. Joy=JOY!

Simon learns Place! He’s almost 15 weeks and LOVES going to Place. He doesn’t know Stay yet, that’s OK. We just started working last week. But he’s a smart little pup.
How to teach Place:
1. Have a bed or yoga mat, something new, or something your dog already loves.
2. Lure him over to the place with a treat in hand. When he gets 4 paws on, you can say, “Yes” and treat, OR (next mini-step) lure him into a lying down position. Mark and reward.
3. The behavior chain we are teaching (chain means: he will do all 3 things for one cue)…Go to Place, All 4 paws on, and lie down.
4. Simon doesn’t have a Stay cue yet, but we’re already working on it. If your dog does, you can start asking for Stay on his place.
Many ways to use Place: at the door when guests arrive, when you need them out from under foot, when they come in from rain or snow, to station themselves at an outdoor cafe…endless possibilities!
Have fun! Follow me for more training tips and cute realtime, real world pups! Training, Walks & Petsits by Paula LLC

CAREFUL TODAY! No long walks…dangerous “Very Unhealthy” Air Quality index (202…carbon monoxide was at 191!) today in the Chicago suburbs. I could smell it and feel it as I took normal breaths on this morning walk with Joy. Stay healthy, my friends!
