Rollover is such a fun trick! Eddie enjoys it immensely. Watch him roll down a little slope in his yard.
How to do Rollover:
Start inside on a soft surface.
1. Pick the side your dog has shifted his hip onto. If he’s lying straight like a sphinx, you’ll have to help him choose.
2. Take a treat from his nose and move it behind his ear. He will move his body to eat the treat and shift more, if not roll. Mark and reward!
3. Repeat at this level and slowly shape more rolling: onto his side (a chill), onto his back (belly up) and finally, roll all the way over and drop the treat on his other side so he finishes it.
Remember to stay at your dog’s comfort level and only push to the next level when he’s loose and receptive! If he isn’t ready to move on, just do something else! No need to roll your dog manually.
Note: if your dog likes to roll in the grass, find a quiet area of your yard to practice this. Many dogs will readily roll on grass, where they might not feel comfortable showing their tummy (vulnerable) inside the house. Have fun! Remember, training is a lifelong journey!
