Want to teach your dog to โBack Upโ? Hereโs an easy, pressure-free way to shape the behavior! My favorite way of teaching is by letting the dog figure it out on their own!๐๐ฅณ๐ก๐พ
For this exercise, I used an x-pen next to my couch, but you can also use a wall or simply position an x-pen to create a narrow V-shaped space for your dog to walk into.
Hereโs how it works:
โญ Toss a treat at the narrow end and let your dog go get it.
โญ As your dog looks up toward you after eating the treat, their weight naturally shifts back and because the space is narrow, they can't easily turn around, so they will likely take a few steps back.
โญ The moment your dog backs up, toss a treat for your dog (can use clicker as well!)
โญ Repeat tossing a treat at the front, then wait for the backup behavior and reward.
โญ Wait a couple of seconds before rewarding to encourage a few more steps backward. The light bulb moment!๐ก
โญ Then add your verbal cue โBack up!โ and a hand motion.
That's it! Once your dog is consistently backing up, gradually start opening up the narrow end of the V so they learn to perform the behavior without the physical boundaries.๐ถ
I actually taught Stewie to back up using a completely different technique a long time ago. He had never seen this setup before, so he had to put his thinking cap on for a bit. But once I started giving him the verbal cue he already knew (โBack up!โ), there was no stopping him!โค๏ธ
