There are many ways to treat cattle. This is just one way that I’ve been using.

Popeye is so solid at this. He stands perfectly still while I load the dart. He’s very stealthy when getting me into position. He’s very quiet while I take the shot.

We’re working on getting him used to roping as well. The darts work good when I’m by myself and the pastures are full of holes.

Popeye has become my go to horse for just about everything.

On my subscriptions I showed the process it took to get this horse to calm down and accept a halter.

This doesn’t look like much but just a little over a weeks ago she wanted nothing to do with anyone.

It’s one thing for her to accept and trust me but it’s a great feeling to see her accept others.

She heads home tomorrow, where her owner can keep progressing her training.

It takes time and you need to take the time it takes!

Ever wonder why training the big stuff can be more difficult?

A lot of the time it’s because we don’t take the time to get them comfortable with the common seemingly insignificant things that form the foundation of training and the relationship.

Sadly too many horses are rushed through these parts of training!

I’ve always had a connection with animals. I don’t look at them as just animals.

They have personalities, talents and abilities.

We are all here for a purpose and I feel I am here to serve not necessarily to be served.

If Jesus was sent here to serve and set the standard for servant hood why should we think we are better.

These animals depend on us for survival and with cattle they pay the ultimate price in the end so we can survive. Our job is to treat them with respect and dignity.

I know sounds mushy but I truly love being around all animals (well maybe not cats, chickens, pigs or sheep 😬😉)

I use a portable step when I can, so what?

I have to climb on and off my horse many times while checking pastures. I’m not a spring chicken anymore.

I used to be on in the blink of an eye, but now due to living a good life I’m not as agile as I once was. Oh and in case you don’t know I’m not the tallest tree in the forest (and I think they’re making horses taller now days).

I think it’s a good training idea to get your horses to walk up and stand still next to an object. I can pretty much walk them up next to about anything and they’ll move into position and allow me to mount with ease.

Also if you’re getting to the point of becoming weaker and less agile, (I know hard to admit but it happens), an extra step can make it easier on your horse so your not hanging off the side and putting unnecessary stress on the withers, legs and back.

Yes I can climb on without a step, and do it pretty graciously but not quite as easily as I can with an extra step. So I use a step when I can, it’s easier on my joints as well!

This step is just a cheap folding stool I picked up at the local farm store for a few bucks. But it was worth every penny!

He’s staring to make the ponies look small. This is probably his last of the smaller ponies.

It’s been quite journey. If only you knew how hard he must control his fear every time he puts on a first ride.

It’s one thing to ride a broke horse after an accident but it’s another thing to put a first ride on one.

No one can tell you how it’ll go or what the horse will do.

I’m trying to teach him the best way to conquer fear is to face it.

It also helps to build both your and your horses confidence by being consistent and precise in your groundwork. Always demanding respect and obedience.

I’m proud of him for being scared but still saddling up and climbing on in spite of it!

I can’t explain any better than this.

This horse got a little sticky when it came to flexing and lowering his head.

I took a few extra sessions to get him to soften.

This is the result of that extra time! Notice how smooth and light he is? Oh and did I mention this was out first attempt at ground driving?
