No dogs required. 🐾
Last night was Part 1 of our four-part PORTL series, and the room was completely dog-free. On purpose.

Here's the secret nobody tells you: dog training is mostly human learning. Your timing. Your criteria. Your plan. The dog was never the hard part — you were. So we take the dog out of the room entirely, and you learn to shape behavior by training the person across the table from you.

You cannot blame the dog when there is no dog. It's humbling. It's hilarious. And it will make you a better trainer faster than almost anything else we teach.
And honestly — what better way to learn than with a glass of wine, a room full of laughter, and good people who love their dogs as much as you do?

It's been odd in Germany to see so few dogs-especially after coming from Croatia where they were at every café, restaurant, dock, store and street. The dogs we have seen have displayed very familiar and similar behaviors to the dogs we work with back home, which could be due largely to the massive heat wave that's been plaguing Europe. We've also seen many people clearly training and building behaviors with their dogs. It's fascinating and we can't wait to share our ideas soon on Paws Away!

We'd heard a lot about how "strict" and "rigid" German society was pertaining to dog training, and our travels and experiences have made us think hard about that question.

We’ve seen fewer dogs out in public here than we expected. And the dogs we have seen haven’t always looked more polished — but we have noticed more people actively training, correcting, guiding, and working with their dogs in real time.

So maybe the question isn’t whether structure creates better dogs.

Maybe it’s whether structure, exposure, expectations, and follow-through all have to work together.

That’s the part we keep coming back to as dog trainers.

What surprised two dog trainers most about Germany?

Not just the dogs we saw in the streets — but the dogs we kept finding in the past.

Carved into buildings. Painted into history. Guarding doorways. Woven into old stories of loyalty, duty, protection, and companionship.

Germany reminded us that dogs are not just part of modern life here.

They have been watching from the walls for centuries.
