I usually post something about dogs or cats so today I want to post something about Birds. The following is from an article by Denise Fleck published in 'PET SITTER'S WORLD' MAGAZINE
1) Vital signs: small birds (Canary, etc)
A) Heart rate 400 - 800 beats per minute
B) Respiration 30 -60 breaths per minute
2)Vital signs : large birds (Parrot, etc)
A) Heart rate 140 - 200 beats per minute
B) Respiration 10 - 30 breaths per minute

First Aid Kit:
1) Scissors
2) Gauze roll, pads, cotton balls, styptic powder, flour or cornstarch to control bleeding
3) Cotton swabs
4) Adhesive tape or Vet wrap
5) Triple antibiotic ointment
6) Betadine or hydrogen peroxide
7) Tweezers ( needle-nosed pliers for larger birds)
8) A gram scale measure weight ( weight loss when not on a diet = vet visit)
9) Heating pad or lamp
10) Thermometer and lubricant if you feel confident to check body temperature ( however, their temperatures are most often determined by environmental temperature, so a household thermometer may suffice).
11) Towels
12) Medicine dropper or syringe
13) Magnifying glass and flashlight to help examine our tiny friends.

After I have finished ready the article I will have more to post about first aid for birds

Here is some advice from the book 'VET ON CALL' about preventing heat stroke.
1) Provide lots of water and shade and take it easy. Set limits on play time.
2) Play and outdoor time should be in the morning and evening when it is cooler.
3) Be careful if your dog is restrained outside. Make sure they are in a shady area with plenty of water and where they can't get entangled up.
4) NEVER leave them in a hot car even for a few minutes.
5) No matter where you take your dog always take plenty of water with you.
6) If they are in a dog house keep it and their drinking water in the shade.
AS ALWAYS check with your Vet for other ways to prevent Heat Stroke.

Remember that in the heat to make sure your dog has plenty of clean fresh water and to walk them during the cooler part of the day, to inspect their paws for signs of burns and to love them with all of your heart.
