How do I know if my dog has an ACL injury?

Typical signs include:

• Sudden hind-leg lameness — sometimes refusing to bear weight at all
• Toe-touching or only lightly using the affected leg
• Limping that improves with rest but returns with activity
• Difficulty getting up, jumping, climbing stairs or getting into the car
• Sitting with the affected leg held out to the side
• Swelling around the knee (stifle)
• Pain or resistance when the knee is flexed or extended
• Loss of thigh muscle, particularly with a chronic injury
• Clicking or popping from the knee, which may indicate meniscal involvement

An ACL injury doesn’t always look dramatic.

A partial tear may cause intermittent limping for weeks or even months before progressing to a complete rupture.

If your dog has persistent or recurring hind-leg lameness, an orthopedic evaluation can help determine whether the ACL is involved.

There are very few chronic orthopedic, neurologic or pain conditions we can "fix" in one visit.

If your pet has had a problem for six months, a year, or several years, it is rarely realistic to expect one treatment session to resolve it.

Pain management and rehabilitation are often a process, not a procedure.

The initial consultation, that we allow an entire hour to, is where we determine what diagnostics are needed, what options may be appropriate and what those options realistically require - in time, travel, follow-up and cost.

Understanding what treatment requires - from time and travel to follow-up and cost - helps us create plan that is realistic for you and your pet.

A simple blood test checks antibodies to the three core canine viruses:

Parvovirus
Distemper
Adenovirus

We know that protection from core vaccines can last much longer than what's stated on the reminder card from your vet, yet annual vaccines is the norm. We think vaccine titers should be more of the standard.

If your vet doesn't offer vaccine titers or they quote exorbitant fees, we can help!

Rabies vaccination is still required by law and cannot be replaced by a titer.

Dakota's Puppy Checklist: Let's talk vaccines for a second. ✅

Vaccines are not all the same for every dog. And immunity isn’t either.

Puppies get protection from their mom at first. But that protection can also block vaccines from working. That’s why puppies get the same vaccines every 2–4 weeks, and the final core shot is given at 16 weeks of age or older.

Core protection includes distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, rabies and—under current AAHA guidance—leptospirosis. Vaccines such as Bordetella, influenza and Lyme are selected according to the individual dog’s exposure risk.

𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿?

Once your puppy is six months old, we can check antibody titers to determine whether they developed an immune response to the core distemper, adenovirus and parvovirus vaccines.

Rabies is still required by law and can not be replaced by a titer test.
