Sometimes, rewards can be something other than treats. A game of fetch, sniffing new things, a good belly rub, or even a fun game of chase can be what your dog finds motivating. Rewarding with what your dog loves can make the difference between repeated good behaviors and your dog choosing his own behaviors that you may not approve of.

Does your dog chase and retrieve a ball/toy, but not return it to you and release it? Using two toys can really enhance their game. When they get the first toy and come near you, wiggle the second toy and say "trade ya." When they drop the first toy, say "good boy/girl" and throw the second toy. For many dogs, this is an easy way to begin teaching them to give up the toy for you to throw. It also teaches a valuable life skill to trade something they might have in their mouth that you need or want them to give up or drop. The motivation is greater when they get something in return and aren't just "losing" their posession.

It may not seem like a big deal to some, but for this little guy and his mama, this outing meant the world. Cooper got out and had an amazing time on his walk today. No fear. No anxiety. Just a fun walk with lots of sniffs. It was work to help him get there, but so worth it! Sometimes things are scary, but when you understand, and take the time to help your dog feel better (rather than just make them do things), you really help make big differences for your pup. Yay Cooper! More fun outings are in your future, buddy.

Sometimes, the world is less intimidating with a friend by your side. My 10 month old Poodle is out and about with sweet Winnie. His calm presence made her feel more confident in this new environment. What a gift to have a supportive friend at your side.
