Does your dog chase and retrieve a ball/toy, but not return it to you and release it? Using two toys can really enhance their game. When they get the first toy and come near you, wiggle the second toy and say "trade ya." When they drop the first toy, say "good boy/girl" and throw the second toy. For many dogs, this is an easy way to begin teaching them to give up the toy for you to throw. It also teaches a valuable life skill to trade something they might have in their mouth that you need or want them to give up or drop. The motivation is greater when they get something in return and aren't just "losing" their posession.

It may not seem like a big deal to some, but for this little guy and his mama, this outing meant the world. Cooper got out and had an amazing time on his walk today. No fear. No anxiety. Just a fun walk with lots of sniffs. It was work to help him get there, but so worth it! Sometimes things are scary, but when you understand, and take the time to help your dog feel better (rather than just make them do things), you really help make big differences for your pup. Yay Cooper! More fun outings are in your future, buddy.

Some dogs absolutely love having dog friends to play with. Others don't. Some dogs would just prefer to spend time with their favorite human(s). Using their body language, they may give other dogs signals to back off and give space. When these signals are ignored, dogs may escalate. They may even bark or growl to communicate. This does not make them a bad dog, and this is information we should take to help us do better with our dogs. They deserve to feel safe and to be listened to. That may mean that we advocate on behalf of our dog to ask for what they need. It's ok to need and give space.

Mental and physical exercise are both so important for your dog. Physical exercise while playing with a good friend is fun! Mental stimuation can be many fun things, like learning new tricks, nose work games, exploring in the woods, food puzzle toys, or visiting fun, new places. On Sunday, this gorgeous, 2.5 year old Standard Poodle, Jelly, will officially join our family. Over the next few months, Jelly will take the first few weeks to settle in as she is acclimating to her new home, the variety of dogs coming and going, and life as a Clawson pup in the country. She has lived much of her life in a big city, but yearns for quieter, more wide open spaces. We couldn't be more excited, and we look forward to introducing her to new friends and clients, when she is ready.
