This good boy has come so far in his training. He used to be so afraid out in new environments. He was so overwhelmed that he couldn't stop worrying about the environment at all. After some confidence building work, practice on leash walking skills, providing positive experiences, and bringing along some confident, helpful dog friends, this sweet boy is now enjoying his outings. Does your dog smile for the vet? If not, you're not alone! There are many things you can do to help improve vet visits. Taking treats, giving your dog trips to the vet that are just visits for treats, practice "injections", or even medications that can be given before you go. I am on vacation this week, but my Pali decided to start a new business on the beach- Beach Pet Therapy. She has made me her staff/partner. This new business requires me to accompany her up and down the beach each morning and evening while she provides opportunities for random beach goers to get pet therapy (meaning they must pet her). She does this out of the goodness of her heart, because she feels she is providing a service to the community, so she doesn't pay her staff. She may refuse to allow me to come home...

It can be hard to have a breed whose genetics tell them they have a job, and their lifestyle dictates they aren't allowed, or cannot perform that job. Those dogs often struggle with anxiety and therefore, they display behaviors that are undesirable to us. Removing the stress, by providing alternative, acceptable outlets to help meet the dog's needs can make a tremendous difference. It can improve your dog's quality of life, and yours along with it!

Alot of clients contact me for help on walks when other dogs are nearby. Walking your dog by or toward another dog can be quite scary or anxiety inducing for many dogs. Helping your dog feel safe in those situations is really important. Asking for a sit from your dog can make them feel stuck or more vulnerable. The best way to work with reactivity on dog walks is to find what helps your dog feel safe and practice that.
