Disclaimer-If your dog does not have reliable recall, it should NOT be off leash but you can still get outside and reap the benefits by using a longline while you continue working towards a dog who can enjoy off leash freedom!

My motto for a lot of things with the dogs is “Help as much as necessary but as little as possible.”

Most people in this situation would’ve walked over and untangled the dog. That doesn’t teach the dog anything other than crippling and enabling them that every time they get in a sticky situation, you will bail them out, which isn’t exactly realistic.

As long as it is not life threatening and the dog isn’t in danger, I will help the dogs figure out how to help themselves. This helps them work thru things-they learn to problem solve. Here, it’s simple, if they moved towards the pressure, the pressure starts to release which could be a life saving skill someday if they were to ever get caught in something. Instead of panicking and freaking out, the dog learns to help themselves.

The next time your dog gets its leash or longline around something, instead of just fixing it for them immediately, try helping them learn to help themselves. You’ll build a problem solver who starts thinking in situations instead of panicking-it may not be pretty at first and it might take a little while but you’ll start building more resilient dog.

Need I say more?

Happy as can be e-collar trained dogs.

My dogs aren’t even in a fenced field either. They are off exploring and being dogs in an open cemetery. I couldn’t quite see them from where I was but knew they were over by the trees doing some of their high value activities (looking for squirrels and checking gopher/mole holes).

Don’t let force free/pure positive people scare you away from e-collar training your dog. When done correctly, it is a beautiful tool that allows you peace of mind and your dogs freedom.

For those that will ask, I use the Mini Educator ecollars. I’ve used them for years and have been really happy with them. They have a 1/2 mile range and are waterproof-my dogs have swam and been in water with them, no problem!

Casey’s mom hired me largely due to his jumping (and mouthiness) with people. The first time I met him, he about knocked me over.

His mom was interested in ecollar training for recall so we also utilized the ecollar for the jumping. I showed her and explained how to utilize it & when I came back 2 weeks later, he made a great choice on his own to not jump!

His mom had texted me prior to arriving and said they were in the back playing ball and told me to go thru the gate. This was actually a great opportunity to really put the training to the test. As you can see, he is wearing his ecollar (in the event he made a choice that warranted a correction), but he sees me, comes running and doesn’t jump! No ecollar was actually used in this moment. His mouthiness has also ceased since he’s no longer jumping as he would do that while he was jumping.

There’s no fallout. He’s still super excited to greet people but polite. She said he’d been doing a great job politely greeting people between our sessions. Shortly after this, we left to go on a walk where he encountered a small child who wanted to pet him and he politely approached and didn’t jump.

This may not seem like much but to many owners, these chaotic behaviors are very stressful. Training helps you and your dog live better lives together.
