🐦 Hummingbird Fact #14
Ever watched a hummingbird turn its head and suddenly flash brilliant color?
Microscopic structures in its iridescent feathers reflect light differently as the viewing angle changes. A male Anna’s hummingbird can reveal vivid color with a simple turn of his head.
Have you caught that moment at your feeder?

🐦 Hummingbird Fact of the Day #13

A tiny nest with room to grow!

Some hummingbirds use spider silk to bind their nests together. In species such as the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, the nest walls stay flexible, allowing the little cup to stretch as the chicks grow.

Soft plant fibers, a little silk, and a remarkable bit of natural engineering. 💚

Had you heard of a nest that can stretch?

✨ Have you ever wondered how a hummingbird can hover so perfectly in midair?

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology just released a beautiful close-up look at two hummingbirds we know well here in Southern California — Anna’s and Costa’s Hummingbirds. 🌸

Using incredible slow-motion footage, they reveal how hummingbirds move their wings in a way that’s completely different from most other birds, allowing them to hover with astonishing precision.

And those brilliant flashes of pink and purple? They’re even more fascinating up close. 💗💜

If you love hummingbirds as much as we do, this one is definitely worth watching.

🐦 Hummingbird Fact of the Day #12

Those tiny hummingbird feet aren’t made for strolling around the garden!

Unlike most birds, hummingbirds can’t really walk or hop. Their short legs and tiny feet are specialized primarily for perching and gripping, while nearly everything about their bodies is optimized for flight.

When you spend most of your life in the air, who needs to walk? 💚

Another amazing little detail that makes hummingbirds unlike almost any other bird.

🐦 Hummingbird Fact of the Day #11

Ever wonder how a hummingbird actually drinks nectar?

It turns out, their tongue doesn’t work like a tiny straw. A hummingbird’s specialized tongue rapidly changes shape when it reaches nectar, helping trap the liquid before pulling it back into the mouth.

And it all happens incredibly fast. 🤯

Just another example of how remarkably adapted these tiny birds are to the way they live and feed.

🐦 Hummingbird Fact of the Day #10

Hummingbirds are among the smallest warm-blooded animals on Earth — and some weigh just 2–3 grams!

But there’s a tradeoff to being that tiny. Their incredibly fast metabolism means they burn through energy quickly, which is why they spend so much of their day searching for nectar and other food.

Tiny body. Huge energy needs. Pretty amazing little birds. ❤️

❤️ Hummingbird Fact of the Day #9

Every fall, tiny Ruby-throated Hummingbirds make one of nature's most incredible journeys.

Many fly over 500 miles nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico—without stopping to eat or rest. For a bird weighing less than a penny, it's an astonishing feat of endurance.

When these amazing travelers arrive in our backyards, a clean, reliable feeder can provide the energy they need to recover and continue their journey.

It's a small act that can make a real difference.

Thank you for helping these tiny travelers. ❤️

💚 Hummingbird Fact of the Day #8

Did you know a hummingbird's wings can beat up to 80 times every second?

That incredible speed allows them to hover in place, dart in any direction, and even fly backward with remarkable precision.

It's one of the reasons hummingbirds are considered some of nature's greatest aerial athletes.

Next time one visits your feeder, take a close look—you may hear the familiar hum, but your eyes probably won't be able to keep up with those wings!

Have you ever tried to count a hummingbird's wingbeats?

🌸 Hummingbird Fact of the Day #7

Did you know a hummingbird can visit up to 2,000 flowers in a single day?

Every visit is about more than just finding nectar. As hummingbirds move from flower to flower, they help transfer pollen, making them some of nature's most important pollinators.

These tiny birds play a big role in keeping gardens, wildflowers, and ecosystems thriving.

🐦 Tiny bird. Huge impact.

💜 Hummingbird Fact of the Day #6

Did you know hummingbirds enter a special state called torpor almost every night?

During torpor, their heart rate slows dramatically, their body temperature drops, and they conserve precious energy until the sun comes up.

It's one of nature's most incredible survival strategies—allowing these tiny birds to recharge after spending the day hovering, feeding, and burning an incredible amount of energy.

Nature is amazing. 🐦💜

Have you ever heard of torpor before today?
