Loki was just an 8-week-old kitten when he arrived at Acadiana Animal Aid in 2012.
He was sick, underweight, and had been rescued from a high-kill shelter on the very day he was scheduled to be euthanized. After more than a month in foster care recovering, he was finally ready to find a home.
At the same time, his future adopter had been visiting Acadiana Animal Aid every week for months. She met wonderful cats along the way, but she hadn't found her cat yet. She was looking for a best friend.
Then she met Loki.
The adoption coordinator opened his cage, and Loki walked straight into her lap and fell asleep. That was it. He was home.
Over the next 14 years, Loki became so much more than a pet. He was a constant companion, an adventure buddy, and a source of comfort through every stage of life. He followed his family everywhere, moved across the country, traveled by car, boat, and plane, learned tricks, chased lizards, begged for fish at the dinner table, and never passed up the opportunity for a warm lap.
He had a way of making ordinary moments special.
Those who knew Loki also knew he faced more than his share of health challenges. He lived with kidney disease and other medical conditions for much of his life, but his spirit never seemed to notice. He met every obstacle with the same determination and joy that defined him from the beginning.
Last month, Loki passed away at 14 years old.
His family shared his story with us because they wanted people to know what rescue made possible. A kitten who almost didn't get a chance at life went on to spend 14 years being loved beyond measure.
That is the power of rescue.
Every animal who comes through our doors deserves the opportunity to become someone's best friend, someone's source of comfort, someone's Loki.
Through Help 'Em Home, you're helping make stories like this possible every day. β€οΈ
