This is an important topic. And one I'm done being nice about.. YOUR CORGI'S WEIGHT‼️
This is Otis. He is 9 years old. He has NEVER weighed more than 30 lbs - and today, he weighed in at the vet at 27lbs. And I am NOT concerned with this weight drop.
Why?
Because Otis is fit, healthy and proportionate for his size. He looks GOOD. He has a waist and a shape, and that shape isn't "SAUSAGE."
Too many people seem to think that corgis are "cHoNkY WiTtLe cOuCh pOtAtOes." NO. They are athletic working dogs who were bred to work and herd cattle. They are intelligent energetic dogs.
🚫CHoNkY is NOT CUTE.🚫
It is unhealthy and dangerous - especially considering they are a short, long, dwarf breed.
Being overweight can cause stress on their hips, their back, their joints, etc.
In the 17 years that I have owned corgis, I have always kept them on a strict feeding regiment to keep them at a healthy weight. This is incredibly important because corgis have the tendency to become overweight very rapidly.
Admittedly, it took me awhile to get his just right. JUST too much a day would make him too fat. JUST too little would make him too thin. Food makes a difference, seasons make a difference.. there are so many factors that play a role here.
Otis is on a higher quality food and eats one cup in the morning and three-quarter cup at night. Low calorie treats are given in moderation & he gets plenty of exercise!
Unfortunately another problem I see, is VETS even telling people that they're overweight corgi is "just fine" when this is FAR from true. And I will NEVER understand that.
I've had too people tell me that they think my dog is underweight.. the problem is not that my dog is underweight, the problem is that people are so used to seeing overweight fat dogs and thinking that is normal.
This idea of CHONKY dogs needs to stop being normalized for the sake of dogs' health.
I mean, I don't know about you but I want my dog to live long healthy life. But if you want your dog to die early because you can't stand to put it on a fu***ng diet - I feel bad for your dog.
Because by doing this, you are blatantly NEGLECTING your dog's health needs -plain and simple.
