(L-R) Pye, Lily, and Regina came to lessons with individual needs and seeking help sorting through a group dynamic. Pye is a lovely girl who doesn’t know her size. She loves everyone she meets but can sometimes be overbearing in trying to instigate play with another dog. Lily is smart and knew a lot of skills but she has a desire to control any and all situations around her home. Regina was new to the group so we wanted to be sure to integrate her without creating too much stress and ensure she could follow commands for happy living. Pye doesn’t live in the same home as Lily and Regina but visits often enough we wanted to find what would work best as far as pairings. Working through obedience skills as a group and sharpening any existing skills allowed for integrating Regina as a new member without scuffles, tone down Pye’s playfulness when necessary, and help Lily hand over the reigns. Balancing work and socializing between 3 dogs can be quite a challenge but this group gained many steps forward in having a healthy pack dynamic.

Tyson came to his new home with some skills built in. His is new family need help with knowing how to ask for commands, building endurance in what he already knew and dependability in his recall if he accidentally got off leash. Tyson was one of the most motivated Danes I’ve had the pleasure to work with. He improved in all his skills quickly and his people did a fantastic job growing their understanding in the process. On graduation everyone had grown in their confidence and combined they make a great team.

Purl is a dog without many vices but she did struggle to vary her pace on walks when needed. We worked in her lessons to gain an ability to yield to leash pressure for more enjoyable walks and rounded out with more self control exercises like Sit/Stay and Place. This lovely girl continues to add to the list of her positive attributes!

S’mores is a well trained boy who spends his days supporting his owner as a service dog. His owner wanted to give S’mores more opportunities for fun and have more security overall by building his off-leash skills. Using the commands S’mores already knew we conditioned him to Ecollar signals. Then we grew his understanding for greater distances to gain a solid “Come on Command”. S’mores is a rockstar student and can now safely enjoy his off-duty time with exploring safely.

Anyone who has owned a puppy knows it is a lot of work. Two puppies is obviously twice the work but many people don’t know there are extra steps you need to take when raising two puppies at once (littermates or not) to prevent unique problems. Jyn and Rey started their training to gain basic skills and also prevent the issues littermate syndrome can produce. Their owner did a fantastic job crating them separately (and in different locations in the house), working skills with each on their own, and having each dog leave the house for walks independently. Both girls improved their abilities to heel, sit, stay, down, place, and come but treating the dogs as individuals with their skill building rather than just a unit helped address their unique needs. As a result Jyn has grown in her impulse control and Rey is gaining more confidence.

Jack is everything you want in a Lab—affectionate, friendly, and ready to accompany you anywhere. Jack needed help reigning in his energy building an ability to settle. We worked on his on leash skills and Jack flew through the tasks showing more self control and focus for his people. When Jack graduated to off leash work you would have thought he had been learning training to be off leash his whole life. We are happy to see this boy now live his best life with his people!

This is Penny, a 6 month old German Shepherd, getting her nails trimmed. It’s not really an exciting video but that is exactly the point. Penny previously would climb whoever was closest, fight the leash, and try to put her mouth on anything touching her feet while singing her battle cry. We have done a ton of desensitizing around Penny’s feet and built trust with handling her body. The long term goal was for Penny to allow more than a trainer to clip her nails. The fantastic ladies at muddy_paws_spa gave us the chance to make that goal a reality! We are so grateful for the excellent groomers available across Southern Illinois.

Porter was adopted from an owner who struggled to train him due to a disability. Before training with his current owner he was a wild man on-leash, thrashing/pulling, jumped, wailing, etc. We started with building his leash skills and then advanced after a few lessons to the e-collar for further clarity. He did fantastic! Porter went to Lowe’s for his final lesson and he behaved perfectly. Porter and his owner did an excellent job building a clear communication system and boundaries opening up more possibilities to enjoy the world around them!

This furry potato is Roscoe! As a 9 year old dog Roscoe came to his current home with a lot of habits that were not serving anyone in the household, including himself. Roscoe needed a new home when his first owner entered assisted living. Previously living in a one owner house with someone who doesn’t have a lot of company over or go out much means Roscoe didn’t receive the necessary exposure to build his tolerance to stress and favored his new female owner over his male owner. An unexpected sound, his male owner coming through a room, or being touched when he wasn’t in the mood would cause over the top reactions and sometimes biting. We had to start with building a coping mechanism for Roscoe involving physical touch which encouraged him to release his over-arousal in an appropriate manner. Having this as a base then allowed us to gradually build exposure to his triggers and teach him to work through them rather than impulsively respond. At the end of his lessons Roscoe had increased his tolerance towards handling for grooming/medical treatment, being in the company of his male owner, accepting company at the house, random noises around the house, and dropping inappropriate items rather than fighting over them. Roscoe and his people are now living a more peaceful life together!

Cash started our Board and Train program as a do-it-when-I-want kind of guy and became a I’m-on-it-right-away champ. We focused on building a solid recall which gives him more freedom in the yard and his dog-siblings a chance at relief when they’re done playing. Cash also improved his settling ability through place and down/stay so it’s no longer nonstop play in the house.
