It’s vet tech week and we are celebrating these amazing women! Becky, Katrina and Megan work hard every day to take care of our clients and their animals. Not only do them assist in the field, they take your calls, schedule appointments, and make sure our hospital runs smoothly. We are so grateful to work with such kind, hardworking women.

We had the best little assistants join yesterday on a big appointment! Vet tech Becky’s two kids helped run the cattle chute while we took care of all the cattle’s different medical needs - vaccines, deworming and other various care - then we vaccinated and dewormed the horse herd for the fall. Such a fun day of caring for animals and seeing young minds learn and be inspired! 🐴🐮

Pigeon fever has nothing to do with pigeons! Rather it’s an infectious disease caused by corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis transmitted to horses from the soil by flies.

We often see it in late August into November in the Roaring Fork Valley. Symptoms include slow growing swellings / abscesses.

This case was unique as the abscess developed in front of and axial to the shoulder. While abscessation can occur anywhere it most commonly involves the pectorals, inguinal region, and ventral midline.

Adequate drainage was provided surgically along with routine wound care with irrigation, packing, and in this case antibiotics with the proximity to the shoulder joint.

Here’s an interesting case of a beloved, semi retired rodeo gelding that suffered chronically from a right sided tearing eye.

As a result of being exposed to lots of dust and wind this past spring, his nasal lacrimal duct had become occluded, forcing tears to wash out over his face. The nasal lacrimal duct normally transports tears from the eye to the nasal cavity.

These pictures show the passing of a special catheter through the tear duct to allow normal tear flow. A very happy, healthy tear flow resumed after the procedure!

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has many uses including in the acceleration of wound healing. ESWT is used commonly in humans with nonhealing diabetic ulcers, this modality has great use in areas of poor blood supply to speed wound healing. In this picture Dr. Stalnaker is applying ESWT to wounds on the distal limb of a horse that was caught in fence panel.
