National Pet Obesity Awareness Day
So many of our pets are at an unhealthy weight.
We can help our pets to be healthier, active and live longer.
In a recent APOP survey, 59% of dogs and 61% of cats were classified as overweight or obese. That equals an estimated 50.2 million dogs and 56.5 million cats are too heavy.
A dog or cat with an ideal body condition will have a visible waist behind the ribs when viewed from above; the ribs can be felt through only small amount of fat; and, when viewed from the side, the underbelly will be tucked up. Your veterinarian can provide additional information
Talk with your veterinarian. They can determine an ideal body weight for your pet and discuss how you can keep your pet at their ideal weight. Also, they can discuss options if your pet is gaining too much weight.

Happy National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month!
We all know that most cities have multiple animal rescues and even rescues that are just for a certain dog breed, but what many people don’t know is how it all started. The very first dog shelter was founded 189 years ago in Britain by a few philanthropists. Following the beginning of the dog shelters came the start of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in 1824. Finally, after a long road with trying to get the community to agree with the mission of the SPCA, the now famous animal shelter grew in popularity. Queen Victoria became a part of that mission in 1840, allowing the society to be renamed the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She loved dogs so much that she owned 35 Pomeranian at one time!

Eventually the United States was introduced to the ASPCA in 1866 and everything started speeding up from there. In Pennsylvania, three years later, one of the first animal shelters was created – the Women’s SPA of Pennsylvania. In 1877, after the introduction of the ASPCA, came the formation of the American Humane Society and other animal rescue organization. National Cat Day
Today we recognize one the oldest and most beloved pets. Colleen Paige established National Cat Day. Owning a cat has been shown to improve mental health and to relieve stress, anxiety and depression.
We love our cats. As any cat owner knows, cats are their own species. They are not dogs or humans. We want to make sure that we are taking proper care of cats and the importance of interpreting and appreciating all our cat's behaviors.

Exercise helps to keep us and our pets healthy. It improves physical and mental health, helps with weight control, and can help strengthen the bond between you and your pet. Some behavior issues can be a result of insufficient exercise and lack of stimulation. Dogs who are left home alone or left in crates all day may act out in destructive ways.
Tips:
* Commit to exercising your pet every day. Walking is just one type of exercise. There are many others that can work for your pet and you, including playing ball/fetch, swimming, hide-n-seek, obedience training, agility, food toys...
* Watch the temperatures - especially the walking surfaces. If the sidewalk, asphalt, or other surface is too hot - it can burn your pets feet.
* Make sure your pets microchip info is up to date.
* Have the proper equipment for the exercise - collar, leash, harness...
* Clean up after your pet.

National Food Safety Education Month
This month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about steps you can take to prevent food poisoning.

Every year, an estimated 1 in 6 Americans (or 48 million people) get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die from eating contaminated food. Some people are more likely to get a foodborne illness (also called food poisoning) or to get seriously ill.

The theme for World Rabies Day 2026 is: “Stronger Together,” highlighting a simple truth: rabies elimination is only possible when we work together.
* Rabies is a deadly viral disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans through bites or scratches. The virus attacks the nervous system and can cause death if not treated.
*There is no cure for rabies once symptoms appear, but it is preventable.
* The best way to prevent rabies is to get vaccinated against the disease.
* Vaccination is also important for pets, as they can transmit the virus to humans.
* Rabies kills an estimated 59,000 people each year, mostly in Africa and Asia. Most of these deaths are children.
World Rabies Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about rabies and its prevention. It is also a day to call for action to eliminate rabies as a public health threat.
This theme highlights the importance of the One Health approach to rabies prevention and control. The One Health approach recognizes that the health of humans, animals, and the environment are interconnected. By working together, we can eliminate rabies as a public health threat.

Sea Otter Awareness Week
We want to recognize the vital role that sea otters play in the nearshore ecosystem.
*They use small rocks or other objects to pry shellfish from rocks and to hammer them open.
*Sea otters eat urchins, abalone, mussels, clams, crabs, snails and about 40 other marine species.
*Sea otters primarily rely on their sense of touch (whiskers and forepaws) in murky waters to locate prey.
*Sea otters have built-in pouches of loose skin under their forearms to stash extra prey when diving.
*They're are considered a keystone species because of their critical importance to the health and stability of the nearshore marine ecosystem. ... Sea otters are also considered a sentinel species because their health reflects that of California's coastal waters.
