Dr. Christine Calder is an incredible veterinary behaviorist I had the pleasure of meeting a few years ago. She’s been on the forefront of research and keeping canine and feline behavior practices up to date and accessible. She is also one of the most kind and lovely people I’ve ever met.
Okay, I have to share this.
I've been experimenting with NotebookLM (one of the AI tools), feeding it the behavior framework I've been working through — and it spat out this graphic. I wasn't planning to post anything, but honestly? It was too good to pass up. So here we are.
Here's the idea it captures, and it's something I wish more people knew:
When a pet is "acting out" — growling, lunging, hiding, destroying things — we love to slap a label on it. "He's aggressive." "She's reactive." "He's just anxious." But those words describe what we're seeing, not what the animal is actually feeling underneath. And you can't help an animal until you know what's driving the behavior.
Underneath, there are really four core "protective" feelings:
🔵 Fear — there's a threat right here, and the animal wants to get AWAY from it.
🟡 Frustration — the animal wants something they can't get to (due to a barrier, a leash, a closed door), so they pushes TOWARD it — lunging, barking.
🟣 Panic-grief — the attachment system. It's about the animal's need for security in their bond with a specific figure. Being left alone is just one moment that exposes it.
🔴 Pain — and this one sits right in the middle, because pain can quietly drive ALL of it. A hurting animal is more fearful, more frustrated, more reactive.
That's why, in our world, the rule is: rule out pain FIRST. You cannot fix a behavior condition while the animal is hurting.
And here's the thing about labels — take "separation anxiety." Two dogs can carry that exact label for completely different reasons. One is genuinely distressed at being apart from their person (panic-grief). Another is frustrated at being shut behind a door, unable to get to what they want (frustration). Same label, different feelings underneath, different help needed. The label hides the very thing we need to know.
So what about "anxiety" itself? Notice it's not one of the four. That's deliberate. Anxiety isn't a separate feeling — it's the anticipation of any of these. The animal bracing for something bad before it happens. So the useful question isn't "is my pet anxious?" — it's "what are they expecting, and why?"
The takeaway for anyone living with a pet with behavioral conditions: try to describe what you actually see instead of reaching for a label. What set it off? Did they move toward it or away? Did they settle once it was gone? Those observations tell us so much more than "he's just anxious."
(And yes — the AI made the picture, but the framework behind it comes from real behavioral science. Always loop in your vet or a behavior professional for your own animal.)
