Sometimes good canine care starts at the toenails

Meet Flash, one of our regular boarding dogs and a very handsome Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.

When a dog walks through the doors at QK, we look at the whole dog. And yes, that means we notice the feet.

Long nails are not something we like to ignore. Proper nail length is an important part of canine husbandry, comfort, movement, and overall wellness. Many owners are uncomfortable maintaining nails themselves, and we understand. That is exactly why our team pays attention.

Whenever possible, if a dog arrives needing nail care, we like to address it right away. Sometimes that means the Dremel comes out before the dog even settles into a kennel run.

In this photo, Sharon and Sydney O from our kennel care team are working with Flash while trainer Sydney E joins in from the background. Lots of smiles, one cooperative Toller, and another set of nails getting the attention they deserve.

Multiply this by all the dogs we care for, and our team maintains hundreds upon hundreds of canine nails in any given week.

Caring for dogs doesn't end when the workday is over.

One of my favorite parts of the day begins at sunset. I saddle up my horse and ride over from our home next door to QK Dogs with my Labradors alongside me. They get a little extra exercise, I enjoy a peaceful evening ride, and I make my nightly check of the kennel.

The best sound is... no sound at all.

The dogs are settled for the night. Everything is calm, quiet, and exactly as it should be. I walk the property, check the buildings, and make sure every dog is safe and comfortable before heading home.

After 26 years of building QK Dogs, these quiet moments remind me why we do what we do. Being hands-on isn't just part of the job. It's part of who we are.

Reliable obedience should hold up in real life, not just during training.

We understand that every dog owner wants training they can depend on. During a recent QK Dogs graduation, the owners stepped out for lunch while their dogs remained on their Kuranda beds in the arena. No reminders. No constant corrections. Just patience, composure, and the confidence to stay exactly where they were asked.

This is the result of the strong foundation we build in our training program. Destination training to the Kuranda bed becomes a practical skill families use every day at home, whether guests arrive, meals are being prepared, or life gets busy.

Watching an entire class demonstrate this level of self-control makes us incredibly proud of both the dogs and their dedicated owners.

If your dog's obedience only works in familiar places, it's not finished.

One evening after chores, I saddled up my horse, Merica, and rode over to the QK arena with my Labrador Retrievers, Filly and Phoebe. While riding, I asked them to heel alongside my horse, work through our challenge course, and respond to obstacles and direction just as they would on foot.

Why? Because dogs shouldn't only perform when everything looks the same.

Real training means exposing dogs to new environments, different pictures, and unexpected situations while expecting the same calm, reliable responses. If your dog understands the principles of training, changing the scenery shouldn't change the behavior.

Your dog needs more than a short walk to stay fit and fulfilled.

We understand that every dog has different exercise needs. For dogs that are physically suited for it, our ATV conditioning program is one more way we provide purposeful enrichment.

Here, Chelsea, one of our skilled QK assistant trainers, is exercising four training dogs on our half-mile woodland trail. Each dog wears a properly fitted harness, and we travel at a safe walking or trotting pace of just 4 to 5 miles per hour. The dogs provide the movement while the ATV allows us to safely guide them through a structured conditioning session.

This individualized exercise helps build fitness, supports mental wellness, and gives dogs another opportunity to enjoy the outdoors as part of our Vita Plena program. At QK Dogs, we believe every dog deserves a balanced day that develops the mind, body, and soul.
