Let’s Talk About Registered Veterinary Technicians!
National Veterinary Technician Week is coming the end of October and we want to take a moment to recognize the incredible veterinary technicians who are such an essential part of veterinary medicine!
But first, let’s clear up a common misconception: a veterinary technician and a veterinary assistant are NOT the same thing.
Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) have completed a formal veterinary technology program, fulfilled the required educational requirements, passed the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE), and met state registration or licensure requirements. They have specialized training in anesthesia, surgical nursing, dentistry, laboratory diagnostics, radiology, pharmacology, patient monitoring, emergency care, and so much more.
Veterinary Assistants are also incredibly valuable members of the veterinary team! They help with patient restraint, animal care, cleaning and preparing treatment areas, client support, and many other important daily tasks. Some assistants gain extensive hands-on experience and develop exceptional skills through on-the-job training. However, they have not necessarily completed the formal education, examination, and credentialing process required to become a registered veterinary technician.
Here’s why the distinction matters: Unfortunately, some veterinary hospitals use the term “tech” or “technician” for employees who have not completed the education, testing, and registration or licensure required for that credential. While these individuals may be experienced and talented veterinary assistants, experience alone does not make someone a credentialed veterinary technician.
In Colorado, the distinction between a veterinary assistant and a registered veterinary technician is important. Clients deserve transparency about the qualifications and credentials of the people caring for their pets.
Being an RVT takes dedication, education, hard work, and a commitment to continuing to learn throughout a career. These professionals are the backbone of veterinary patient care, and their knowledge and expertise deserve recognition and respect.
