Bringing Home a New Cat or Kitten? Take It Slow!
Adding a new cat or kitten to your family can be exciting—but for your existing pets, it can also be a BIG change. A little planning can make the transition much less stressful for everyone. ❤️
Here are some tips for a smoother introduction:
🐾 1. Start with a separate room
Give your new cat their own quiet “home base” with food, water, a litter box, hiding spots, toys, and a comfortable place to sleep. Don’t immediately give them access to the entire house.
👃 2. Let them get used to each other’s scent
Before face-to-face introductions, exchange bedding or gently rub each pet with a separate cloth and place it near the other pet. Scent is incredibly important to cats!
🚪 3. Let them meet through a barrier first
Use a closed door, baby gate, screen, or other safe barrier so they can see and smell each other without direct contact. Pair these interactions with treats, meals, or playtime to create positive associations.
🍗 4. Make introductions SHORT and POSITIVE
When they’re ready for supervised meetings, keep them brief. Reward calm behavior with treats and praise. If either cat becomes overwhelmed, separate them and try again later.
🐕 5. Don’t forget the resident pets!
Give your existing cat or dog plenty of attention and maintain their normal routine. This helps reassure them that their world hasn’t been turned upside down.
🛋️ 6. Provide plenty of resources
Multiple food and water stations, scratching posts, beds, hiding places, and elevated perches can help prevent competition.
🚽 7. FOLLOW THE LITTER BOX RULE!
A good general guideline is one litter box per cat, PLUS one extra. Place them in different, quiet areas so cats don’t feel trapped or forced to share.
⏰ 8. Be patient!
Some pets adjust in a few days. Others may take weeks or even months. Hissing or some initial uncertainty doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll never get along. Don’t rush the process!
