🐕☀️ Planning a lake day with your pup this summer? A little preparation can make the adventure safer and more enjoyable for everyone!

Before heading out, make sure to pack:
💧 Plenty of fresh drinking water and a bowl
🦺 A properly fitted life jacket for pets who are swimming or boating
☀️ Shade, cooling mats, or breaks out of the sun
🐾 A leash and secure collar with ID tags
🧴 Pet-safe sunscreen for light-colored or thin-coated dogs if needed

While many dogs love the water, it’s important to remember that not all pets are natural swimmers. Even strong swimmers can become tired quickly, especially in deep water, strong currents, or after long periods of play. Life jackets are a great safety tool for boating, paddle boarding, or extended swimming sessions.

🚫 Try to prevent pets from drinking lake or river water. It can contain bacteria, parasites, blue-green algae, or other contaminants that may cause vomiting, diarrhea, or serious illness. Offering frequent fresh water breaks can help reduce temptation.

After your trip:
✔️ Rinse your dog off to remove algae, bacteria, or debris
✔️ Check ears and paws for irritation or foxtails
✔️ Watch for signs of overheating, exhaustion, vomiting, or diarrhea

Safe pets make the best adventure buddies. We hope you and your furry family members have a fun and safe summe

We have a lot of people who travel to and from Alaska every year. As much as you guys don’t want to believe there are ticks, even in Colorado, there are now these pesky friends even in Anchorage.

Found on a local anchorage pet just 1 day ago. Yup, it's a tick. It will be sent to the state vet office for identification and possible infectious disease testing. The family was hiking near flattop in Anchorage and this little gem was found hours later. The pet has NOT been outside of Anchorage. I'm sorry to tell you that ticks ARE in Alaska. Please consider talking to your vet about whether flea/tick prevention is right for your pet.

☀️ Summer adventures are better when your pets are prepared! If your dog or cat will be boarding this season, now is the perfect time to make sure vaccines are up to date — especially Bordetella for dogs. Give us a call before your trip plans sneak up on you!

🚧🐾 Fremont Veterinary Hospital is currently practicing veterinary medicine in what feels like a live construction zone. Between barking dogs and power tools, our team is mastering the art of hearing heartbeats through drilling. 😅

We appreciate everyone’s patience while we work through the chaos to make the hospital even better for you and your pets. The animals seem less bothered than the staff honestly. 🐶❤️

Looking for an easy way to boost your dog’s mental stimulation and slow down snack time? 🐾

Lick mats are a simple, affordable enrichment tool that can keep your pup happy and engaged! By spreading soft treats like peanut butter or canned food across the textured surface, your dog gets to work licking—an activity that naturally promotes calm behavior and reduces boredom. Pro tip- freeze the mats for a more time consuming challenge!

Benefits of lick mats:
✔️ Mental stimulation
✔️ Helps reduce anxiety and stress
✔️ Slows down fast eaters
✔️ Great distraction during grooming or vet visits

Pictured here is Chupacabra, Dr. Metcalfe’s adorable adoptee from the Humane Society of Fremont County, enjoying some enrichment time! 🐶💙

If you have questions about safe treat options or other ways to keep your pet mentally and physically healthy, our team is always happy to help!

Not Just for Humans (Sunscreen for Pets)

Think fur protects pets from the sun? Not always! ☀️

White-haired pets, those with thin coats, and pets with pink skin (especially on noses and ears) can get painful sunburns and are at higher risk for skin cancer.

Protect your pet:
• Seek shade during peak sun hours (10 AM – 4 PM).
• Ask us about pet-safe, non-toxic sunscreen (Avoid anything with zinc oxide or salicylates!).
• Don't forget the belly—many dogs love to sunbathe on their backs!

Keep that skin protected! 🧴🐱🐶
