Archie may look a little sleepy in this picture, but that's because he was neutered this morning and also had a gastropexy procedure performed by Dr. Cameron!

A gastropexy is a procedure that attaches the stomach to the inside of the abdomenal wall to prevent the stomach from being able to twist. A twisted stomach traps gas and cuts off blood. This emergency situation is known as bloat or GDV.

Large dogs with deep chests have a high risk of stomach twists. Great Danes, German Shepherds, and Standard Poodles get this surgery often. It is recommended to have a gastropexy performed during a spay or neuter if your pet is at high risk for bloat.
