Goats are our πŸ₯–&🧈!!! Nestled in the Mountains of WNC

Daily Goat Feed for your feed! 🐐

If you're just joining then something to know about our farm is we rely on natural sustenance for feeding our goats during the spring and summer with our heavily forested areas on the property, This keeps costs down and maintains important nutrients and minerals for our goats. (we keep them away from toxic plants ofcourse)

As it gets colder, everything goes dormant and there's less and less fresh greens for the goats and they are not happy about it πŸ˜… Instead of making them quit greens cold turkey and go back to hay, we take a more acclimating approaching. As the greens are less, they get a little more hay. So on and so on until they're back on a full hay diet for the winter.

A happy, healthy rumen is a happy, healthy goat! How do you handle your goats diet in the winter? Do you stick to hay all Summer?

Thanks for Reading!

Starting to get a little closer to that cold weather πŸ₯Ά so we're finishing up our Goat House Winterization, we'll post the content soon!

( This is simply our method and not directions, feel free to use how you feel! )
First up is a good clean out. They're going to be well insulated in straw for the winter so starting fresh is the way to go but there's work to do before adding the new straw.

Next up is adding boards to the front to shrink down the "Summer" entrance. That way there's less air flow which is pretty wide open for the summer heat. Smaller entrance out of the way, we fill in any gaps except the slits above the entrance to maintain a very specific "Winter" airflow to not lose too much heat, maybe we'll cover this in a video πŸ˜…

Next we tarp the walls inside to seal and control the airflow inside. With all that out of the way, we slam in a nice, large amount of straw. We'll double or even triple the straw if extreme cold is coming in. The final step is a windbreaker in the front of the entrance to, as you guessed it, break up the wind that would otherwise come directly througth the entrance BUT don't forget to keep this whide enough for your pregnant goats to be able to get in and out 🀣

Thanks for reading and keep your goats warm! ❀

With the work on the Christmas Trees slowing down for now, it's been a great time to get some other much needed projects done around the farm. My favorite one was repainting the old little barn ❀ the old thing needed it desperately and wow! what a difference 😍 we'll make sure to get some pics of it uploaded soon!

The list of projects right now πŸ˜… oh boy what a list! Grating needs to be done, a septic tank installed, a water line installed, lots and lots of mulching to do, a greenhouse needs to go up, Goat house needs finished, the list goes on! 🀣

Never a dull moment is it? 😁

It's been a terribly warm Fall so far πŸ₯΅ luckily that means putting off some winterization on the Goat houses πŸ˜… Careful about letting the cold sneak up on you! The last thing you wan tto do is end up flooring it down the road for more straw and hay or scrambling to thaw some water troughs 🀣 it's ok these things happen, a little at a time and done early makes a world of difference. Winterizing your goats isn't something to be put off until it's too late.

Dry shelter with wind breaking, extra hay for keeping the rumen active and drinking water are crucial. Having some premade walls to screw into the sides of your goat houses that can be easily removed for the hot season is a great way to make it a manageable task. Swinging doors are wonderful between rain and hot seasons but if you live anywhere that get's really cold in the winter then swinging doors might not be the solution for you as gaps in the wall will cause a draft in extreme cold and at the least requires more insulation.

There are a variety of things you can use for insulation for your goats but be smart, don't put fiberglass in your goat house 😬 If nothing else, more and more straw is a great way to insulate a goat house until you can pick up supplies in an emergency situation. I say emergency but extra bedding should be a go-to no matter what for winterizing your goats. Dog food bags with staples or light framing nails are a handy and "free" way to insulate your goat house if your budget is really tight this season! (Tip: staple or nail so it's taut to keep the noise down from wind)

Just some helpful tips and thoughts as we get closer and closer to the colder days that are coming πŸ₯Ά Everyone have a wonderful night and thanks for reading! We hope to see you at our next Sale!

If you're just joining us then welcome in! Our family owned, small farm is about sustainable living and rediscovering diy crafts and abilities lost to us.

This journey of ours started from simple needs like healthy products including anti bacterial soap WITHOUT all the harmful ingredients mixed in that was actually good for our skin. After all the experimenting, we ended up with a product that we loved so much that we felt we had to share it with as many as people as we could!

We were originally offering our products on Etsy but with all the extra costs and fees, we decided it was time to start our own website 😁 This is still in the works as we're making our website ourselves without paid services to stay more in control of our own product and small business and reduce all these extra fees that we're being hit with these days. It's more work but well worth it!

Stay tuned for our website to drop for your Goat Milk Soap, Sugar Scrub & Shea Body Butter made by Hillhaven Farm LLC!

And a Happy Pasta Day to you! 🍝

It has been a huge "hustle & bustle" on these Christmas Trees πŸ˜… We have replanted nearly half the field but we hope that's all. With more of our family moving onto the property, the work is well worth it! As expected, not all survived the replanting 😭 no matter if you expect it or not, it still sucks. The rest are standing strong and have been establishing really well. Hopefully this trend continues and a little winterization for the little guys will keep them happy and healthy til the spring!

The work we've done this year seems so small but it's laid the foundation for the shear amount of countless plans we have in store for the future.

Family is a powerful entity to rely on in trying times like these and lately, we could all use any help that we can get πŸ˜…

Quick Goat Update:
Billy has been living it up in the "big pen" with the girls but with these kids due soon, changes are coming his way 😒 It will be back to the buck pen for him, it's not like a bad thing! He has more than enough space but he'll be getting use a to a slightly older wether to be his new buddy. As any goat owner should know, goats do not like to be fenced alone. so a wether is kind of a necessity for him..."wether" he likes it or not 🀣

Hello familiar and new faces! We are back after a bit of an absence due to family emergencies but the farm is still kicking like always πŸ˜„

We must have been a little off for Ms. Chloe's due date since she still doesn't look quite ready but the signs are starting to show so we'll be seeing some new babies on the farm very soon!

If you're new to our page then welcome! ❀ A quick backstory to catch you up on Chloe. This is her first litter, technically her second as she miscarried with her very first litter. These things can happen, especially on the first pregnancy.

Keep an eye out for some gorgeous kid goats! Stay tuned with us here on the farm 😁
