AgCare has winter annual seed in stock. Winter annuals encompass both agricultural cover crops and forage varieties used to manage soil and pastures.
In Western North Carolina and the broader Southeast, winter annual cover crops are critical tools used after the main summer season to build organic soil matter, prevent erosion from heavy winter rain, catch excess nitrogen, and provide premium livestock or wildlife forage. Farmers typically plant them from late August through October and terminate them in the spring.
Winter Cereals (Grasses): Excellent nutrient scavengers and biomass producers. Top regional varieties include cereal rye, winter wheat, barley, and triticale (such as the early-maturing Sprinter variety).
Legumes: Powerhouse plants that actively fix nitrogen back into the soil. Clovers (including crimson, red, and ladino), Austrian winter peas, and hairy vetch are the most widely utilized winter-hardy options.
Brassicas: Deep-rooted options like tillage turnips or forage radishes that are highly effective at loosening compacted or heavy clay soils before winter.
We have these in stock and can help you select which is best for your needs.

AgCare has annual rye for $18.50 per 50-pound bag and annual wheat for $15 per bag. These are excellent winter cover crops for areas where you have removed crops or a garden, and they make outstanding livestock and wildlife forage. They also protect soil from erosion, improve water infiltration, catch excess nitrogen, and build organic soil matter.

Please join me in keeping Alvin Lytle's family and close friends in your thoughts and prayers. Alvin passed away on Thursday after heart issues. Ironic, considering how big his heart was for the animals, land, customers, family, and friends he cared about. He was a hard-working farmer who produced a lot of food for this community and a great friend to those of us fortunate enough to know him well. Rest in peace, Alvin. You will be missed.
