Heat-related injuries are the single biggest threat to your high-drive working dog.

Not rattlesnakes.
Not torn ACLs.
Not getting hit by a car.

Heat.

A dog with enough drive will work right through the early warning signs. It’s our job to recognize them before it’s too late.

1. Causes of Heat Injury
• Overexertion
• High humidity
• Poor conditioning
• Inadequate recovery
• Dogs that won’t quit
2. Heat Injury Categories
• Heat stress
• Heat exhaustion
• Heat stroke (medical emergency)
3. Treatment
• Stop working immediately.
• Get the dog into the shade.
• Begin active cooling with cool water and airflow.
• Transport to a veterinarian—even if the dog appears to recover.
4. Prevention
• Build conditioning gradually.
• Schedule work around the heat.
• Give breaks before your dog needs them.
• Watch humidity, not just temperature.
• Learn your dog’s normal recovery time and don’t push past it.

The best treatment for heat stroke is never letting it happen in the first place. (50% of the dogs who get to heat stroke will die even with veterinary care)
