Since being adopted, Chippsy and his owner have been teaming up to help him reach a healthier, happier weight. When he started his journey in June, Chippsy weighed in at 23 lbs—and thanks to consistent portion control, daily exercise, and lots of love, he was down to 19 lbs by August!

Rabies is one of the deadliest diseases in the world—but it’s also 100% preventable through vaccination.

This World Rabies Day, let’s work together to protect our pets, our families, and our community by staying up to date on rabies vaccinations.

Did you know?
🐾 Rabies is a viral disease that affects the brain and nervous system of mammals, including dogs, cats, wildlife, and humans.
🐾 It is most commonly spread through the bite of an infected animal.
🐾 Once clinical signs appear, rabies is almost always fatal.
🐾 Vaccination is the best and most effective way to prevent the disease.

How you can help:
✔️ Keep your pet’s rabies vaccine current.
✔️ Avoid contact with wild animals, especially bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes.
✔️ Never approach a wild animal that appears sick, injured, unusually friendly, or is acting strangely.
✔️ If your pet has an encounter with wildlife, contact your veterinarian immediately—even if you don’t see a bite wound.

🚌🍎 Back to School Means Sharing the Road! 🍎🚌

As students head back to school, our roads and neighborhoods become much busier. Let’s all do our part to keep our community safe!

🚸 Slow down in school zones and obey posted speed limits.
🛑 Always stop for school buses when their red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended—children may be crossing the street unexpectedly.
👀 Stay alert for children walking, biking, or crossing the road, especially during the morning and afternoon hours.
📵 Put distractions away and keep your eyes on the road.

And don’t forget our four-legged family members! 🐾 Keep dogs on a leash during walks near schools and bus stops, and be mindful of increased traffic during pickup and drop-off times.

A few extra seconds of caution can make all the difference. Let’s work together to keep our students, families, pets, and neighbors safe this school year.

As the leaves begin to change and the temperatures start to cool, it’s the perfect time to enjoy crisp walks, hiking trails, and outdoor adventures with your pets. 🍁🐶

But don’t let the cooler weather fool you—ticks are still active throughout the fall! In fact, they often hide in leaf litter, tall grass, and wooded areas, waiting for a passing host. Many tick species remain active anytime temperatures are above freezing, and some can even survive during mild winter days.

Here’s how to help protect your pet this season:
🍁 Keep your pet on veterinarian-recommended flea and tick prevention year-round.
🍁 Check your pet thoroughly after spending time outdoors, paying close attention to the ears, neck, armpits, between the toes, and around the tail.
🍁 Be cautious when walking through piles of leaves, wooded trails, and areas with tall grass.

🐾 What Every Dog Owner Should Know About Scabies (Sarcoptic Mange) 🐾

Did you know that dogs can get scabies, also known as sarcoptic mange? This highly contagious skin condition is caused by microscopic mites that burrow into the skin, leading to intense itching and discomfort.

Common signs of scabies include:
🔹 Severe itching (often nonstop!)
🔹 Red, inflamed skin
🔹 Hair loss, especially around the ears, elbows, hocks, chest, and belly
🔹 Scabs and crusty skin
🔹 Restlessness due to constant scratching

How do dogs get it?
Scabies spreads through direct contact with an infected dog or fox, but it can also be picked up from contaminated bedding, collars, or other objects. Dogs of any age or breed can become infected.

Can people catch it?
Yes—but only temporarily. The mites can cause an itchy rash on people, but they cannot complete their life cycle on human skin and typically resolve once the infected pet is treated.

The good news?
✅ Scabies is treatable! Your veterinarian can diagnose the condition and prescribe effective medications to eliminate the mites and relieve your dog’s discomfort. Other pets in the household may also need treatment, and bedding should be washed to help prevent reinfection.

If your dog is scratching excessively or developing unexplained hair loss or skin irritation, don’t wait—schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. Early treatment can help your pet feel better sooner and reduce the risk of spreading the mites to other animals.

From guiding individuals with vision loss to alerting to medical conditions, assisting with mobility, and supporting those with other disabilities, these remarkable dogs make a life-changing difference every single day.

As we remember the lives lost and forever changed on September 11, 2001, we also pause to honor the remarkable search and rescue dogs who worked tirelessly alongside first responders in the days and weeks that followed.

These courageous dogs searched through smoke, debris, and dangerous conditions with unwavering determination, helping rescue teams in one of our nation’s darkest moments. Their loyalty, resilience, and dedication became a source of hope and comfort for countless people.

Today, we remember not only the victims, survivors, and first responders, but also the four-legged heroes who served without hesitation. Their legacy reminds us of the extraordinary bond between humans and animals and the incredible impact that working dogs have in times of crisis.

Please join us in taking a moment to honor all those affected by 9/11 and to recognize the service and sacrifice of the search and rescue dogs who stood beside our nation’s heroes.
