🍔🌭🔥 BBQ Season is Here—Let’s Keep It Safe for Every Member of the Family! 🐾❤️

Nothing says summer like a backyard BBQ, but while we’re enjoying burgers and hot dogs, our pets may be tempted to sneak a bite. Unfortunately, many BBQ favorites can be dangerous for our furry friends.

🌭 Keep These Foods Off the Menu for Pets:
🚫 Corn cobs (can cause life-threatening intestinal blockages)
🚫 Cooked bones (they can splinter and cause choking or internal injuries)
🚫 Onions, garlic, and chives
🚫 Grapes and raisins
🚫 Chocolate and desserts containing xylitol
🚫 Alcohol
🚫 Fatty meats and table scraps, which can lead to stomach upset or even pancreatitis

🍢 BBQ Safety Tips:
🐾 Keep pets away from hot grills, charcoal, fire pits, and lighter fluid.
🐾 Secure trash bags and garbage cans—leftover bones, skewers, and food scraps can be irresistible.
🐾 Watch out for wooden skewers and aluminum foil, which can cause serious intestinal injuries if swallowed.
🐾 Make sure guests know not to feed your pet from the table.
🐾 Provide fresh water, shade, and a safe, quiet place to relax if your gathering gets busy or noisy.

🐶 Remember: Even the friendliest pets can become overwhelmed with unfamiliar guests, loud noises, and lots of food around. If your pet seems anxious, giving them a calm place indoors may be the safest and most comfortable option.

🌊☀️ A Day at the Lake is Better with Your Best Friend! 🐾🐶

There’s nothing quite like spending a summer day exploring the beautiful Finger Lakes with your furry companion! Whether you’re boating, kayaking, swimming, or relaxing on the shore, a little preparation can help keep your pet safe while making lasting memories.

💧 Lake Day Safety Tips:
🐾 Bring plenty of fresh water and a portable bowl—don’t let your pet drink from the lake.
🦺 Consider a life jacket, especially for puppies, senior pets, or dogs that aren’t strong swimmers.
🌞 Provide plenty of shade and take breaks to avoid overheating.
🧴 Rinse your pet off with clean water after swimming to remove bacteria, algae, and other contaminants.
🐕 Keep your dog on a leash where required and always supervise them around the water.

⚠️ Watch Out for Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria)!
Blue-green algae blooms can occur in lakes throughout New York, including the Finger Lakes, especially during warm summer months. These blooms can produce toxins that are extremely dangerous—and sometimes fatal—to pets.

🚫 Avoid the water if you notice:
• Bright green, blue-green, or turquoise discoloration.
• Thick, paint-like or pea soup-looking water.
• Floating mats, scum, or surface streaks.
• Water with an unusual odor or posted algae bloom advisories.

Even if the water looks calm, harmful algae may still be present.

❗ If your pet has been exposed to blue-green algae, contact a veterinarian immediately. Signs of poisoning can develop quickly and may include:
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Excessive drooling
• Weakness or stumbling
• Difficulty breathing
• Muscle tremors or seizures

🔥🐾 Hot Pavement = Hot Paws! ☀️

Summer sunshine is great—but those sidewalks, roads, and parking lots can become dangerously hot for your pet’s paws in just a matter of minutes.

🌡️ Did you know?
When the air temperature is around 85°F, asphalt can heat up to 140°F or more—hot enough to burn your pet’s paw pads.

🐾 Try the 7-Second Test:
Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds.
✋ If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws!

Here are a few ways to keep those paws protected:
✅ Walk during the early morning or evening when it’s cooler.
✅ Stick to grass or shaded trails whenever possible.
✅ Bring water for both you and your pet.
✅ Watch for signs of burned paw pads, including limping, excessive licking of the feet, redness, blisters, or reluctance to walk.

🐶 Remember: Some pets—especially puppies, senior pets, and brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds—are also more sensitive to heat and can overheat quickly.

🌫️🐾 Air Quality Alert: Protect Your Pets During Wildfire Smoke 🐾🌫️

Smoke from the Canadian wildfires is impacting air quality across New York State, including many areas of the Finger Lakes. Just like people, our pets can be affected by poor air quality and may have difficulty breathing when smoke levels are elevated. An Air Quality Health Advisory is in effect across New York today due to fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke. (⁠Department of Environmental Conservation)

Here’s how you can help keep your pets safe:
🐶 Limit outdoor walks and playtime—keep potty breaks short.
🐱 Keep cats indoors.
🏠 Keep windows and doors closed whenever possible.
❄️ If you have air conditioning, run it on recirculate and consider using an air purifier.
💧 Make sure your pets have plenty of fresh water.
🚫 Avoid strenuous exercise, especially for brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, senior pets, puppies, kittens, and pets with heart or lung disease.

⚠️ Watch for signs of smoke irritation:
• Coughing
• Sneezing
• Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
• Wheezing
• Eye irritation or excessive tearing
• Lethargy or weakness

If your pet develops any of these signs or seems to be struggling to breathe, contact your veterinarian right away.

🌞 Your Summer Pet Care Checklist:
💧 Keep fresh water available at all times.
🌳 Provide plenty of shade and avoid the hottest parts of the day.
🐾 Protect paws from hot pavement—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!
🦟 Stay up to date on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.

✔️ Helps prevent itchy flea infestations.
✔️ Protects against tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease.
✔️ Reduces the risk of tapeworms spread by fleas.

Whether you’re heading to the beach, the mountains, or just visiting family, traveling with your pet can be a wonderful adventure—as long as you plan ahead!

🐶🐱 Before You Hit the Road:
✅ Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with up-to-date ID tags.
✅ Ensure their microchip information is current.
✅ Pack the essentials: food, water, bowls, medications, leash, waste bags, favorite toys, and a cozy blanket.
✅ Bring copies of vaccination records if you’ll be staying at hotels, campgrounds, or crossing state lines.

🚙 Car Safety Matters
• Always secure pets with a crash-tested harness, pet seat belt, or travel crate.
• Never allow pets to ride in the front seat.
• Keep heads inside the vehicle—flying debris can cause serious eye and ear injuries.
• Plan breaks every 2–3 hours for potty, water, and a chance to stretch.
