Yuri is German Shepherd and Husky, and in my opinion, the best of both breeds combined. 🖤

She loves her people, wants to be with you, is very affectionate, and excitedly whines like a shepherd when she sees you.

She has a friendly temperament, welcomes strangers, and talks like a husky. But unlike a lot of huskies, she doesn’t have a strong prey drive and isn’t an escape artist.

She’s a good mix of independent and wanting to be near you, and listens well. She aims to please, and is sensitive to angry tones and loud, reactive dogs.

She loves playing with other dogs! Shes an active girl but can also be a couch potato after a good walk or play session. She doesn’t need to pull sleds. 😋

Four active girls in the rescue means I am also very active right now. 🥱🫠

Today was a beautiful day for lunch break walks. Several turkeys ran across the road in front of Fiona and she was a little curious but didn’t make a peep. And her leash-walking skills are improving a lot! 👏

On a related note, if anyone loves to walk or jog or run, I know where you could borrow a companion. 😜

Huge thank you to Grover Gaming for donating an incredible $2,500 to the rescue!

Grover Gaming develops software, game content, and gaming systems and works with charitable gaming organizations, like our local Pellerins Event Center Bingo.

This donation was made in memory of my Great Aunt Marilyn, who passed away this winter. She was not only a pillar of the community and our family, but also of Pellerin’s Event Center. 🖤

This $2,500 will be SO helpful with vet expenses, monthly prevention, prescriptions, and food! 🙏

Some may think this is overkill, but it’s better to be prepared and have the tools you need ready, just in case.

My play group necessities (*especially* for new rescue dogs/play group pairings we’re not super familiar with yet).

✨ Two people.
✨ Ideally a walk together first.
✨ In the rescue yard, dogs meet through fence first so I can gauge body language and decide if we’ll continue.
✨ Leashes in case we need to quickly get a dog restrained and back inside.
✨ Sometimes a drag leash left on for quick grabbing.
✨ An air horn in case we need to distract and interrupt quickly in an emergency.
✨ Water bottle on stand by for emergencies only.
✨ A phone (mainly for pics but also in case a call for help is needed, cause you never know).
✨ More safety items are just inside the back door, like a bite stick, separation board, Spray Shield, etc.
✨ Continue to read body language and pay attention throughout the playtime, make sure everyone is having fun, and intervene early if needed.

Dixie is a bit anxious here and really wants to spend more time with people, so I’d also love to get her into a foster home if possible. OR better yet, adopted! 😋

All about Dixie Doodle:
✨ 11 months old, 39lbs, spayed.
✨ Loves people. Can be a little hesitant at first, but she warms up quickly.
✨ Loves other dogs and is very playful!
✨ Not reactive.
✨ Was in a SC foster home with cats and ignored them.
✨ Overall great, happy temperament.
✨ Mostly potty trained.
✨ Good at the vet.
✨ Walks well on a leash with harness.
✨ Needs continued training with jumping and counter surfing.
✨ She would make an excellent agility dog!
✨ She’d love an active home where she isn’t alone much.

Ya know that feeling when you get hit with a crazy expensive bill and your stomach drops? That’s what happened when I reached out to companies about having hazardous trees cut/pruned in the rescue yard. The *lower* estimate I got was $9k. 😫💸

But because of two incredibly generous donors, I was able to pull my stomach back into place.

Last fall, Marylou Hecht, Director of Galgos del Sol, gave the rescue a very significant gift, which we have been using on things like the new playground piece for the yard, a mobile sensory garden, and covering some of Molly’s emergency vet bills last winter. And then $7,000 went toward the trees.

Then, the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation, kindly covered the remaining $2,000.

Because of their generosity, we have a safer yard and no tree debt. Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it! 🖤🌳🌲
